I live in Oz, as some already know, I am slightly confused
You all refer to this dog as an Australian Cattle Dog, but as far as I can make out from pics posted it is a dog we call a Blue Heeler, am I correct here?

Percisley, it is the blue/red heeler they were just recategorized as the australian cattle dog, such as the Jack russel is now the parsons and so on.

I'm not sure...but I thought the Parson's Jack and the Jack were different breeds, or at least types, wit the parsons having the longer legs. I used to know :-P

The parsons jack russell is the only TRUE jack russell. Any other Jack Russell is a mutt not a purebred, the parsons jack russell was developed in the UK as a light fox-terrier type dog. They are the only type that are registerable. The other type of Jack russell are just terrier mutts people call jack russells because they dont like to say they have a mongrel dog. SOME may be crossbred with parsons jack russells but most are not. There is currently consideration being undertaken in the UK kennel club to make a "short legged" jack russell into a recognised breed with breed standard. HOWEVER it is likely that 90% of the current "jack russells" will be unregisterable with this scheme as lineage will have to be proven for at least three generations and also those horrible deformed queen ann front legs that small smooth haired jack russells are famous for will not be permissable. It is even a possiblity that only wire-haired dogs will be accepted by the breed standard. Lou

Wow, I've seen about 15-20 jacks in the past 2 days (been at a lot of festicals ad everyone around here has a jack), and they were ALL short legged smooth jack russels. I wonder if all these people know this? And amazingly, I even met a calm one, I was suprised. I never knew that about jacks, thanks for clearing it up But I must admit...I think I like the smooth coats better...it'd be a pity if they only accepted wire coats.
