Hi everyone! I am new to this forum and I guess I better introduce my self. I don't have any dogs but I hope someday I will get one. I have a really cute hedgehog; his name is Frodo!
The reason I don't have a dog is because I have asthma and same with my dad so we are really allergic to dogs. I was wondering, is there any dog that an asthmatic can get and won’t be allergic to???
Thanks!! [Big Grin]

There are three that come to mind right away:

Chinese Crested
Portugese water dog
& Poddle (any size)

These are non-shedding dogs which are usually better for allergies.

You can go to the AKC website to read more about them.

I also have allergy-induced asthma, and I have two dogs and a cat. I have boxer's, and they are a very short-haired dog with minimal shedding. My dogs have never bothered my allergies or my asthma, but my cat used to. After a couple fo weeks of sneezing and using my inhaler I developed an immunity to her dander and now she doesn't bother me either.

It would, however, probably be best to go with a non-shedding dog as doglover recommended since both of you have allergies and everyone's tolerance is different.

My mother is very allergic to dogs, as well. Amazingly, however, she is perectly fine with her lab/rott/pit puppy...I wouldn't suggest that, though. Labs can be heavy shedders (for some reason molly isn't). Another couple of hypo-allergenic dogs are the italian greyhound, and the soft coated wheaten terrier.

I would say a soft coated wheaten terrier; do Keeshonds shed? I'm not sure. Good Luck

Yup, keeshonds shed. Alot, I think. Cute dogs, though [Smile]

Here's one thing that may help you decide on which breed is for you-

Miniature and toy poodles, as well as italian greyounds and chinese crested, can live in apartments, yet the standard poodles and wheaten terriers need more excersize, and more space. They all take quite a bit of grooming. The chinese crested is hairless, which may be a little unnatractive for some people, and the italian greyhound is extremely fragile. The wheaten and the standard poodle are both quite solid dogs. All of the poodles are EXTREMELY intelligent dogs, even if the look a little fru-fru. The soft coated wheaten is probably the least fru-fru looking dog out of the bunch.

That's all I can think of, though.

No offense to you Doglover you are right about those breeds not being shedders:),but Chinese Crested are really hard to take care of. Before they go out you have to put sunscreen on them to keep their skin from burning. If you don't take proper care of their mouth their teeth will fall out. They are seceptible to skin cancer(melanoma) if left out in the sun to long. They can't be outside for a long time in the summer & they need to be kept inside the house during the winter, and when they do go out they need to be wearing a very very thick sweater to keep them warm.Hope you get your pup.Good Luck finding one.
