A lot of you probably read my post about Ginger and her puppies in the health forum. And if you didn’t already guess what is coming next here it goes… I am falling in love with those puppies. I feel so attached to them. I want so much for them to have a good life. Around here decent dog owners are few and far between. Seeing dogs on chains and roaming the streets is a common sight here. And I don’t know of too many people who would want to take in a “mutt”. So I am playing with the idea of taking in one of these puppies. The thing is, I live in town and I do not want a kennel. So my questions are: Do you think a large breed dog living indoors is an okay thing? Do you think a dog could be happy like that? I know the importance of exercise for dogs so we would walk it everyday if possible. Also, is it inevitable that your house is going to smell like a dog even if you keep it clean? The only other choice I have is… I have a fairly large yard for being in town. I live on the outskirts of town where things stay pretty quiet. It’s a small town anyway so that wouldn’t be a problem. My yard is fenced in but it is a picket fence type. Would that keep a large dog in? And is there any way that you can train a yard roaming dog to go poo in a certain area so we wouldn’t be stepping in it when we played in the yard? lol So tell me straight, am I dreaming or is this feasible?

I'm at work so can't take too much time. Keep the pup(s). I live in a city and have two rotti's that stay inside and have a doggy door to go outside. They get daily walks and care.
The house doesn't smell like dog - they have a room where they sleep that gets a littley doggy in humidity before I vaccum. They have all sorts of sprays, powders, etc. so you can keep your home as fresh as you like.
Go back thru some of the training posts and you'll see excellent posts on how to get your dog to go in a special area of your yard only.
It depends on the dog but many of them won't be tempted to jump a 3ft fence.

Ginger is a golden retriever right? From what I've seen, if they are well excersized and have time in the yard, they make great pets indoors. You should be fine keeping one or more of the puppies, if you have the time. My house has never smelled like dogs, and my Molly mainly lives inside, although daisy lives outside. Mollys a larger breed, and she's perfectly fine with a few walks a day, and outisde time, and alot of love and playtime from us, and a little offleash time. She'd even be fine if she didn't ahve quite as many walks as we give her.
I'm so glad you're considering taking in one of the puppies, I hope you do and wish you luck!

No matter what.... it sounds like the pup(s) would have a better life with you than your mother.
PSSST - take Ginger too!!!! Use the excuse that it's easier to look after them at your place. If your house has a basement that would be a nice cool dry place for Ginger until the pups are weaned - then a great nursery, etc. I'm sure with a little work you could train Ginger and get her calmed down.

I think you should keep them. As soon as you start weaning them I would start crate training; I know this is going to be about 4 -5 weeks away but it’s never too early. It should cut down on the accidents in your house. Move Ginger and her pups over as soon as you can; it will be easier for both of you and you won’t have to worry so much! Good Luck and great job. Big dogs can be great house dogs!

Dogs of all sizes are happiest when they live indoors with their owners. As long as they can be taken or let out to play. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I think that it would be lovely for you, but don't get too attached at the moment, I feel the pups are fairly well set back, if any do survive you have a long road ahead of you, I don't want you to get hurt, nature can be very fickle. But the good part, if you do manage to get one to survive, it will be very, very, special, will be attached to you, and make a great companion. So yes, keep one, you deserve him/her, by the way what sexes are there? And yes you have my prayers and hugs going to you.

If all the puppies pass away, is there a possibility that you could take ginger? I think she's in need of a wonderful home as well!

The puppies are male and female. Daisy and Duke. Duke is doing great, eating wonderful and pooping good. Daisy is eating so-so but I haven't been able to get her to poo. I can tell they are filling out though.
