Hi:
My name is Nancy. I am a new member of this forum. I have a 5 months old chocolate lab named Duke. ^___^
I have a question about toilet training. Whenever Duke needs to go, he would sit in front of our door silently. How can I teach him to scratch the door or make sounds so I do not need to always check if he is sitting in front of the door?

welcome to the forum.
you will have to make a schedule to take hime out and relive himself. if he hasn't had any potty training then you might want to take him out about five times a day and over time gradually decrease the amount of times as he gets older. by repeating this he will learn that outside is the proper place to go potty and will come up with his own sign to let you know when he has to go out. my dogs will start to bark to let me know. make sure to take him out after eatings and after playtime and also take him out if a vister comes by and he gets hyper or if he gets hyper for any other reason, when the get excited the tend to potty right after.

Welcome! I had the same problem with my dog. Once you get him on a schedule it is much easier. Now my dog will run to the back/front door to let us know he needs to go out. I do have a problem with him not letting me know when he is ready to come in. He will just stand at the back door & wait. Now he has started the habit of going out a million times a day just to sniff the air. Good luck!!

Welcome chocolab, I have 3 labs, one of each color, they are just adorable aren't they, Ellies pups have just started to go but I wanted to keep everyone, she had 5 chocolate and 3 black, they are sooo cute!!!
You could teach yours how to get your attention, mine do, they are so easy to train, Sophie will bark when she wants out, Ellie will push me with her nose, when your asleep a wet nose on your face soon wakes you, lol.
Do it with food, if you have the sit, down command, down pat with her, hold onto a piece of food when she does something to get your attention give the food and praise, it takes a couple of days but well worth it.

I love my labs.

Thanx ellierat. I am glad to meet so many nice people in this forum.
FYI, I have my dog nutered today. He is not as energetic as usual [Frown] ( he would run around and try to play hide and seek with me before). I guess he will be back to normal after couple days. My lab stays with me all the time, and you are right, the cold nose wakes me up every morning. He loves to come and burst his nose into my face. [Smile] Just can't stop to smile when thinking about it.

I bought one of those old fashioned bells that you can hang on a door knob at Christmas time. I taught our Great Dane (10 months) to move it when he wants to go outside. Though, most of the time he will come in the office or wherever I am & nudge me! I clicker train, so, I would have a bunch of small treats & take his paw to the bells. Once they'd chime I'd click & give him a treat. After doing this about 50 times, VOILA! Good luck. [Wink]
