I've heard of females spending the night but boys are always out that day. The boys are such small incisions but girls are a bit touchier with the long sutures and all. Savana came home the same day but was in early in the morning and came home late in the day. I remember that day vividly as I had the worst case of the flu I've ever had and she was completely out of it till the next day so she came home and was all grogy and just snuggled up next to me as I never left the couch.

I understand this practice in theory...but there is one scenario I do NOT.

If the vet is closing at 6pm, and there is NO ONE AT ALL in there from 6pm until 7am or whatever when they open, HOW is that better than the dog being at home?? Unless the dog is on fluids, I cannot see one possible reason for leaving the dog unattended for that long after such a major surgery.

In that case, I would not leave a dog overnight. Why? So they can come in, in the morning, and tell you there had been a problem, so sorry?

good luck to Josie!

as for overnight..it depends on the vet. its not common here at all..out of the 8(Shadow, Happy, Misty, Blair, Rusty, Arctic, Perky and Ripley) dogs I have had spayed or neutered and the 6(Guinness, Casper, Buddy, Bella, Lux, Willow) dogs I was closley involved with the spay/neuter all at many many differnt vets, only 1 has ever been kept overnight, and that was different..the vet that spayed Shadow about 14 years ago screwed up..we dont know what he did but he kept Shadow for 3 days(2 nights) and screwed up her tummy so badly that she was throwing up every single day for most of her life afterward! other then that every vet I have ever dealt with takes the dog in between 8-8:30 am and sends the dogs home after 3pm.

Yeah I agree... that's why I never liked the idea of leaving them either... what good does it do unless someone is there monitoring them?

I guess if size matters, it makes a whole lotta sense. Holly is so little, her spay incision was literally about an inch long. My vet must have worked under a microscope. lol
