Help on choosing a dog

My neighbor is looking to buy a dog.

He has a house with back yard.

He ask me a question:

What kinds of small size dogs are good with kids?

I’m thinking about (not in any particular order):

·American cocker spaniel

·Beagle

·Sheltie

·Boston terrier

· Dachshund

What do you think?

From my personal experiance I would say no on the cocker... They can be awesome, but if he doesnt know to raise it well with kids... might not be such a good idea. Dachshund same, sheltie... they can sometimes be nippy depending on raising too... I would say beagle and boston DEFF!!! they are great! or hey, why not a mutt?!?!

I agree with fostermommy...not a cocker or a dachsund but a boston would be good.

Dachsound or boston terrier. These are calm dogs that do not need a lot of attetion.

I'd say no to the cocker too. I was bit by one as a kid.
To this day I am still afraid of them LOL Give me a Rottie anyday over a cocker!
Shih-tzu's are good with kids too.
What does he want in terms of grooming ext...
Keep in mind the tiny ones could get hurt by a playing kiddo!

Do you know what they are looking for in trainability, grooming, excercise requirements? Have they owned a dog before?

I wouldn't go for a small dog if the children are very young.... The dog could easily get hurt.

Herding breeds will probably try to herd the kids... I think something from the non-sporting group would be best.

Does anyone remember the on-line quiz that helps you determine what dog's right for you? There's one that asks quite a few questions of you in order to help make the determination.
