On all our German Shepherds, we just use a normal dog brush, with 2 sides
-one side has soft thick bristles, the other has spaced sharper bristles.

GSD have sensitive skin so you have to be careful not to use something that might scratch them. I use a med/soft brush and then gently comb to get all the hairs separated and any undercoat that is loose. The brush works well to distribute their natural oils and bring a nice sheen to the coat.

I use a bore bristle brush on my smooth collies. It works great. Mason Pearson makes some, but Hidus also makes them and they are a lot cheaper. I find that it takes all the dead hair out better than a reg. pin brush

the best thing that i can see for a GS coat is a Rake brush. It will be able to get the knots and tangles out of the hair, and also get the undercoat out of the way, you an do it before you bath, right after the bath ( while the furr is wet) and also after when the animal is dry. This wil help get any undercoat off, while not hurting the dog. The stickler brushes don't go down far enough so all you are doing is getting the first coat off... you need something to go deeper to get the undercoat.
