sweeney has no teeth...well, he's lost more than he should have...

poor sweeney has lost all his premolars, but nothing has grown in to replace them. he lost two the end of august possible early september, and lost another one last friday. the vet says not to worry, they aren't adult teeth, but he's got open areas of gums in his mouth. Not open holes, but places with no teeth. on one side its almost and inch and a half long, on the other side 3 quarters of an inch. they are definitely puppy teeth that are falling out as there is no roots attached, and minimal bleeding/no holes when they fall out. i just worry that this will have a bad effect on him when he's older. (doggy dentures?!)

This shouldn't effect him in the slightest. I don't see where you get the idea that it would?

Look at kids who lose their teeth early or have no teeth for a bit!

Have no roots attached? Are you SURE? They should have roots attached, it's not the end of the world if they don't. But if they really don't, what are you giving Sweeney to chew on? Maybe he's breaking his teeth off and that's why there are no adult teeth?

When Ollie lost his teeth, especially the canines, the tooth looked double ended. One end was the root the other was the tooth.

I grew my first tooth when I was 19 months old.

I lost my first baby teeth when I was 8, and my brother kicked me in the face. Those were the only baby teeth I ever lost by myself... The rest were wrenched or surgically removed... and it took a long time for them to grow in.

Point of story: don't worry about it. LOL

i was worried that he'll have to "gum" his food instead of being able to crunch it, or be on wet food forever.

when he lost the first one, i thought he ripped out an adult tooth with his rope bone, i called the vet, she asked me to look in the tooth to see if there was a root. it was slightly pulpy inside but hollow- she said it was a baby tooth and i guess the roots absorb, thats why they fall out. she said if there was a root, i would have been able to tell, and he would have needed to bee seen.

these are premolars i found a chart online, they are the pointy teeth midway on the sides in his lower jaws. there aren't any remnants left in his jaws as if they had broken, there is only empty gums where his teeth used to be.

Well good then, you have nothing to worry about.

You are correct that the roots dissolve.. but it's also possible that teeth can fall out with the root. Ollie's did.

he'll be alright, just go to the vet and get an x-ray to see hat is going on underneath the teeth that he has lost. this might solve any problems that might arrise.

BUMP-- i have a question for Brooke

Brooke,
He's lost another tooth, so now he has an empty space a little over an inch long on both sides of his lower jaw... Is there some sort of disease or genetic factor that might be the cause of no adult teeth growing in? what types of questions should i ask my vet when i take him in? he has his front teeth, his canines, where his pre-molars should be, all 4 are gone on one side, and the tiny one right past the canine is still there on the other side, his molars are still there. He started losing these in august, and lost the one tiny one yesterday, and still nothing has grown in. other than these missing teeth, his mouth is clean, no tartar build-up or inflamation, i look every couple days to see whats going on in there. he eats hard food, gets shank bones(he just chews the meat off, and doesnt crunch through the bones), he chews his kong, and rope bones. i saved all the teeth he's lost, except the little ones in front, i think he may have swallowed those, so i could even bring them in to the vet to look at. i just worry he will end up losing all his teeth soon and he's not even a year old.

Sometimes there is a bigger space between the canines and the pre molars.

rutylr,
its not just a larger space, the premolars are gone and nothing grew in to replace them, i can fit at least my thumb in the space between his canine and his first molar. he's a westie and his whole lower jaw is barely 4 inches long.
he has 15 teeth in his lower jaw instead of 22, and the last premolar is almost about to fall out. so that will leave him with 14 teeth.
