More questions on puppy shots

Tank got his 2nd set of puppy shots last month and should go back the week of Oct. 9th for the last set BUT I'm takin him in on Oct. 17th cuz he needs a checkup on his Demodex mange which I'm giving him medicine for now. So I was gonna knock everything out on that one day. Is it ok to wait a little more than a week before his last set of puppy shots? He got the rabies shot and distemper shot this past time.

Mmm, I'd ask your vet, I'm not sure if they have to be given at the correct interval otherwise you don't get full immunity. I know our vet put a puppy through a new set of shots from the start even though the breeder had done the first lot - because the owner left it too long for the second lot.

How old is tank now? Why did they give Rabies so young?

Vaccines should be given every 3-4 weeks. At ages 8, 12, and 16 weeks.

Can they look at the mange a week early?

BabyE - Breeders don't know what they are doing. Puppies do NOT need vaccines prior to 8 weeks of age. Why? Because they have their maternal antibodies and will not lose them until at least 8 weeks OR up until 16 weeks. It's been proven this is the gap when they lose the maternal antibodies, but each dog is different. Which is why we do a series of vaccines to ensure that we get as close as we can get. A dog could easily lose it at let's say 10 weeks, and for the 2 weeks (until the 12 week appointment) could be suceptible to those diseases. Which is why we also suggest keeping puppies within their own homes and to avoid PetsMart's and Dog Parks etc, cause they may not be covered by the vaccine.

When you said the owner left it too long.. it really doesn't matter, as long as you get ALL vaccines around 16 weeks of age. The pup could technically go vaccine free until this date, BUT since Parvo, Distemper and these diseases attack immunocompromised animals (IE-puppies with no immunity) so readily we vaccine to help prevent it.

Which is like the Bordetella vaccine. It doesn't cover all strains, and it's not known how LONG it lasts. 6 mos? 1 yr? We don't know. But it HELPS prevent it, in the case that the dog is exposed.

Too many shots are given puppies and dogs for that matter, it is causing more problems then what they are to prevent in a disease. Cancers, tumors, liver failure, kidney failure, etc. These shots are powerful and little pups do not need the set given in past of about every 2 weeks given. Kayiela I kept to almost 8 months til sold to a crying Police Officer, she only had two shots ........period.

Puppies cannot tolerate all this stuff one wonders why they get diaherra, listliessness, not wanting to eat good, drink, etc. It is tooooo many shots. I only give a straight killed virus of Parvo at 3 weeks for people to come and look and take pics of them. Then they get vetted at six weeks and a card by the vet of a six in one shot...........then I tell my people not to go to vet till 12 weeks to get a Rabi and booster. That is enough other than one more to one year.

But as I just explained.. they need something at 16 weeks too. You can't just vaccinate at 12 weeks and hope it was AFTER the maternal antibodies have left the body.

And why do you even bother vaccinating BEFORE 8 weeks of age? It's been proven puppies do not lose these antibodies until after this age.

We vaccinate against parvo as early as 5-6 weeks because parvo has been known to be a problem around here. But then still recommend the normal combo booster series starting at 8 weeks old (DAPP) and then every 3-4 weeks after. Unless you have a vet receipt it is impossible to know what the breeder had done so most vets start the series from the beginning. At the vet I work for we send a report card for every pup that states how much the pup weighed, what its temperature was, the sticker label from the vaccine bottle, and one free heartgard, one free frontline and copies are made and left in the bitch's file so if we get a call about a puppy's vaccines, we have the info there and handy, if the bitch owner did not pass the info/paperwork onto the new owners.

You guys still don't understand. There is no need to vaccinate that early, technically. However, puppies have their maternal antibodies until 8 weeks. Meaning, if you vaccinate earlier than this point then it's nullen void because they still have their maternal antibodies. The part where you say 3-4 weeks, and you don't know what the breeder has done so you start at 8 weeks. Regardless of whether you know or don't know.. if you were to say the pup got it at 6 weeks, you waited till 9-10 weeks for the second set. They could easily lose it at 8 weeks (as proven) and then for 2 weeks be suceptible to the Distemper, Parvo, Adenovirus, and Parainfluenza. Wouldn't it make more sense, just to start at 8 weeks. It's all a matter of luck really.. but it seems like the chances are better at starting at 8 weeks as opposed to before the maternal antibodies leave when we KNOW the vaccine does nothing.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself well enough. I just have a hard time understanding people's (or breeders) ideas of how puppy shots should go down or shouldn't. When it's pretty basic. I think it's also a touchy subject with me cause I used to have clients try to argue all the time with me about their dogs vaccines.
