Puppy feeding !

Ok - I took some dried puppy food and soaked it in some chicken broth....took a long while, but it was finally ready to mash up. They all went crazy over it -- another way to look at it woul dhte food went all over them ! LOL -- it was a crazy mess, but lots of fun.

....and of course, some questions:

Do they pups drink water ? How many times a day should i feed them ? Will they learn to be more neat about feeding -- or was it my mistake not using a bowl?

Awww how sweet! I'm glad they did so well!

Yes puppies can drink water, not much at first but you can definetely get them used to it, make sure it's in a shallow dish and supervised at first.

I started off feeding mine once a day until they got the idea, then I increased it to 3-4 times a day. I'm not sure how much yours should eat, with Bichon babies they start off with a teaspoon each meal time.

They actually look pretty tidy for their first meal lol.
They could have looked like this instead. lol

But they will get neater soon, keep feeding them with shallow dishes and they'll soon get the idea that it's more fun to eat the food than play in it.

I have found that I soaked the food for the next feeding when I dumped the food out for that feeding. I would put the food in soak it in milk then put a bowl over that to keep the food pushed down in the milk mixture.this way it will be ready for the next feeding. With the collie puppies we start at one and a half cups (depending on the # in the litter) then slowly increase it as they grow. If they eat it all for the food for two feedings then we put another 1/4 cup in there until they eat all that twice then keep increasing it. Play it by ear. They will eat till they are full.

They are never neat regarding their eating skills until they are older. I fed mine three times a day. If the food goes quickly at one sitting increase the amount a little. I used to put my food in the blender mixed with chicken broth. This way I could make a big batch and have it on hand. As they got older I did not blend it so thoroughly so they learned how to eat a solid kibble. Yes they need water! Keep a bowl full at all times. You can hang it on the wall so they drink it and not play in it.

Like every one we start them all of small meals, building up on volume as the pups grow, It all depends on your breed size how much they will eat, are dogs are all medium to large so I would expect to be feeding a min of 3 times a day, just looked at you picture you have a lovely litter.
Small tip for you to save time if you put your puppy mix into a bate box and once you have added you hot mix place the lid on and it will ready in no time, grate if pups are hungry and you need more food quickly then when pups are older and eating more i often have one ready pretty much all the time,

Sounds like you are doing well. My pug pups make just as much mess. But after the first day or so they don't seem to like the moistened food so I offer dry and moistened and it's amazing how fast they chose dry. Always offer water, but use a shallow dish my pups frequently sleep in the bowl and deep water scares me. anyone ever have a pup drown? My pups are checked often, they are right in my room or living room, so we can see everything that happens.
