Unhappy Poppy isn't well...

Poppy hasn't been well for a week now, she had discharged from her eye last week and I bathed it, it seemed to be getting better but she was off her food for a couple of days and then she had the runny monster. I came home yesterday lunchtime to see the discharge from her eye running down her face in copious amounts So I took her to the vets straight away, he diagnosed conjunctivitis but said that shouldn't cause her to be off her food.

He checked her out and everything else was normal apart from her **** glands being full. He gave us some drops for her eye and told me that if she doesn't start eating again I've got to take her in on Monday and they will do some tests. He said we needed to keep an eye out for pyometra and I had to watch for discharge from her vulva. I also have to make sure she doesn't start producing milk as well otherwise she will need treatment to bring her out of a phantom.

So does anybody have any idea why **** glands get full and can anybody think of anything else that could be wrong with her? I hate to see my baby suffering like this.

When dogs have runny poop the glands don't express themselves. It is good for dog to have a nice solid poop so they strain a little. You can express them once your vet shows you how. Definately not something you want to do when you have company over.

Hope Poppy feels better soon. Did the vet empty the glands?

A*nal glands get full because with domestication.. dogs have lost the ability to express the glands themselves. Certain breeds and certain dogs are worse than others.

Sounds like a bunch of clinical signs.. none related though. I'd give it some time. The eye should clear up with the prescription and if you notice the bizarre eating habits again, address them seperate.

Hope Poppy feels better.

The domestication part - Has something to do with the fact that domestic dogs eat food that is more digestible, as opposed to wild dogs who eat everything. So the domestic dogs have softer poop, leading to what Dax is talking about.

Hope Poppy feels better soon. Time for a bland diet.

Yep, he did <yuck>. She started eating food again yesterday (bland diet like Moo said) so I hope she's going to be back to her normal self soon. I hate to see her so miserable...
