Unhappy OMG my poor Lilly!!

I posted about Lilly last night, here’s an update.

As I said in my original post, yesterday I let my brother take care of her for the day as she was getting sick of coming to work with me, I was late home but when I finally picked her up she started having diarrhea (sp?) when she got home. I didn’t think it was too serious,

I noticed she was trembling and I started to get very concerned, then later she started vomiting and she was crying a lot, I thought she just had an upset stomach still so I rang an emergency vet again (had already rung numerous times when she was first showing signs of being unwell) they said, once again that it was fine and to take her to my vet in the morning if it persisted.

She was refusing water so I had to force it into her with a medicine syringe, she seemed very quiet and extremely tired, she went back to sleep and I thought she was getting better again but she continued to vomit, she started twitching and I knew something wasn’t right.

Then she started crying loudly and she started vomiting even more and then she fell asleep on the couch (still twitching and shaking) so I rang my normal vet and made an appointment for 8:00am on the answer machine, I tried ringing him at home but there was no answer.

Lilly was then sick all over me so I went and had a quick shower (about 5 minutes) when I came back I saw she was bleeding! So I rushed her to the emergency vet and by this time she was vomiting excessively again and had severe diarrhea with the twitching becoming uncontrollable! I was ******** out and nothing would stop her.

The vet rushed her in and examined her and she started to seizure as soon as we got in there!!

He put her under general anaesthetic and pumped her stomach. She is now on muscle relaxants and anti-seizure medications until the poison has gone from her system! Also IV treatment as she is very dehydrated.
It turns out that while she was at my brother’s house she ingested Snail baits from his neighbour’s garden (he was not aware of this, however they WERE!), the exact amount is unknown but because she is so little it is a major concern!

She is in a very critical stage and I was told quite bluntly that there are no guarantees she’ll survive! I’m so scared of losing my baby girl, I never imagined having to go through this and I can’t handle the thought of anything happening to her!

She is so helpless right now and I can’t do anything to help her, its breaking my heart.

I’m trying to remain positive though, this was caught reasonably early and treated aggressively so that is a good sign! She’s a tough little thing and I know she has a very good chance of pulling through! I’m trying to stay strong for her!

I was also told that side effects such as brain damage and liver failure can also happen. And the liver failure occurs 48-72 hours after the initial poisoning! Her liver enzymes will be monitored and her body temperature will also be monitored until she’s in the clear. There are other concerns too but the vet didn’t get into that with me just yet and he didn’t seem very optimistic!

They said I had to go home and get some rest but I’m allowed back in an hour, I’m going crazy right now! I didn’t want to leave her but she’s unconscious so she won’t notice and the vets will ring me if there are any problems!! It’s so hard not being with her though. I feel like this a horrible nightmare and I just hope with all my heart that she’s ok!

The vet asked me if I wanted to transfer her to my normal vets but I don’t want to take the chance, I don’t care how much it costs. I’d pay anything for Lilly and I know she is bet where she is already being treated plus they have more resources in case she goes downhill.

Anyway I just thought I’d let you guys know, sorry it’s so long! I’ll keep you updated when I can! And if possible please keep her in your thoughts!

Oh my gosh, Brooke, that is terrible! That the neighbours knew that she ate the poison and didn't notify your brother, that's crazy.

I have my fingers crossed for little Lilly. Kirby and I, as well as the rest of the forum I'm sure, will be here for you every step of the way. Hopefully everything will turn out alright in the end.

Be strong,
Moo

Oh my gosh, this isn't good news! However, you got to her the vet early on and they are doing all the right things. They are required to give you all the possibilities, but that doesn't mean they will happen. Lilly has a fighting spirit and she will fight to get better. Let's try hard not to jump to conclusions, o.k.? Let's all use our positive energy to pray for her and the doctors and wish her well.

If something doesn't go well, we'll all deal with that then. But, for now, be a positive spirit as best you can.

Wow this is so terrible. I'm so sorry little Lilly is going through this. Lilly is a strong baby and she knows how much you love her. She won't leave you.

Stay strong and I will be praying that Lilly passes this.

You have my prayers and long distance hugs. Please do keep us informed and try and get some rest. Getting ill yourself will not help Lilly.

Brooke, I am so sorry about Lilly. She is such a little trooper, she'll make it through.
Our thoughts, prayers & hugs are with you both.
It's an awful situation, hang in there and be strong.
I'm so glad you followed your gut on taking her to the vet!
Take care and I'll keep looking for updates.

Thank you all for your support!

UPDATE:

Lilly’s general blood-work has come back good, her overall health was great before this and they are still monitoring her liver enzymes and body temp, liver enzymes are looking good but her temp is reasonably high still.

She’s awake now, but just. She is disorientated still and in pain. She is also very anxious.

They lowered medication and she started convulsing again so she’s back on a higher dose now.

She had an Arterial blood gas analysis (think that’s what it’s called?) which showed that her blood is acidic but that is expected after seizures etc.

It’s still very touch and go, he said he wants to keep her in for 72 hours and if she gets worse we have to discuss our options, I don’t like the sound of that and hope he is just giving me a worse case scenario. He said that each case is individual and he couldn’t tell me one way or another at the present time. All we can do is treat her, make her comfortable and remain hopeful.

I’m going back there again soon, the vet rang before and said they have inserted a breathing tube but that it is only a temporary measure and hopefully it can be taken out soon. My own vet is going to see her at lunch time and he’ll evaluate her too.

The clinic are running some more tests and checking out her organ functioning etc when I get back there too.

My brother’s neighbours are refusing to talk to us, all the details we can get is that she ingested it approximately 4-8 hours before I took her in! They didn’t notify anybody as they didn’t think it was a big deal, they won’t tell us how much she got and they won’t give us the exact product details! So the police are going around there to question them.

I hate seeing her like this but I will not give up hope! She’s a strong little girl and I have to just remind myself of that!

Thanks again!
