Thumbs down W O R M S!!!!!!!

I just found out Eli(the fawn Dobe) has WORMS!!!

The issue is I had a fecal done on him a week ago, came back clear. He is currently pooping live worms, shouldn't the Vet have caught that? I have no t yet seen them, but I was told they are the kind they get from fleas.
Now, I am worried about heart worm. He will be tested in the AM.

A poop exam looks for eggs & egg casings. I'd ask why they didn't show up. Or maybe the vet is trashing the samples and pocketing the cash.

Oh My the vet should have a report from the lab on the results, ask to view this report done on your pet in person, demand it.!!

Some vets are so money orinated they do things wrong such as one here in our town was to be burying pets put down, he got caught dumping them on a hillside, it was in our local paper, but never heard what became of him , he is still in practice big as u please. they get away with things because money talks, I never went to him but had I he would not of gotten off very easy as he did.

Push to view the report taken before hand and demand it. Ask why your pet now has worms all of a sudden.

Oh poor Eli. You would think the vet would of caught it in the early stages. Has he already been wormed or hasn't yet??? I remember Roo had been wormed and was pooping out worms anyway so we had to reworm him. Then we didn't have any problems afterwards

I have no idea if he has been wormed or not, the lady didn't give me much info on him. Since his fecal was clear last week, I obviously didn't worm him.
He will go to my regular Vet from here on out. This guy is working with PetSuites, and gives me great prices, not worth the price if he doesn't know what he is doing!!

I make a point of worming Bodie every 2-3 months with a vet recomended wormer ( Drontal plus+) as he has a terrible habbit of picking up and sometimes eating slugs and snail's out of the garden, so far so good no sign's of worms but with him being fed on a Barf diet too I need to keep up with the regular worming.

The meds that they give for heartworms also kills other intestial worms. If he was on Heartworm meds then he should be clear.

Has Eli been rehomed or is he at petsuites ? I am just curious about why the vet didn't catch it too. Are they SURE it is his poop ?

I doubt he was on any heart worm stuff.
Eli is still at PetSuites, I think I have a home for him. It is his poop, the dogs are never together, and poop is scooped before another dogs comes in contact.

Nope. Tapeworm (the worm associated with fleas) is not something that is generally covered under heartworm medication. Usually that is roundworm and hookworm, and then Sentinel (I think) also covers whipworms.

Tapeworm can be transmitted by one single flea at any given time.

Praziquantel, I think is the active ingredient that you should look for in a dewormer for Tapeworms.

Good to know, GretaJack.

We don't have fleas here. at least I have NEVER seen them and none of my animals have ever got them. So I never really gave that one much thought.

I have Rudy and Jenna on Interceptor, ( milbemycin oxine ). It says nothing about Tapeworm. I am going to have to see if it is a problem here in Manitoba.

Thanks for the info!
