This morning, Blaze was chewing on a bone and i didnt think anything of it, then all of a sudden i hear him choking, and i dont see the bone so i open his mouth and look down his throat. Sure enough the bone is stuck in his throat, i flip out, an try to get it out. No luck, bc it was slimy and i coudnt get a grip on it. Then he stands up and starts gagging, i step back, hoping he throws it up. finally he stops and looks at me, i open his mouth again, no bone. Well for a few minutes he was acting funny so i start to get dressed to go tot the vet. Then he starts playing with Hailey, and acting like his usual self again. i stayed up with him for about a half hour. no problems. all seems Fine and dandy so far. But will he be able to pass it? It was a Piece of a bone from the big one that he managed to break off. it was about an inch long and maybe a 1/2 inch in diameter...Well did learn one lesson....dont let them chew on the small parts.

It was um...from the store? one of those big long, very hard ones. Not the stuff they make out of the pig ears.

Chopper,
If it was a rawhyde bone, the ones with the knots at both ends the dog should be able to pass it. Even a pressed bone should pass okay. If it was a butcher bone watch the dog closely, they can be sharp and the edges could poke a hole in his intestines causing shock and worse. If you notice your dog not eating or drinking take him to the vet and let the vet know what you suspect. This happened to one of my dogs and I did not even think about the butcher bone she had eaten the day before. She spent three days in the vets before she died. The vet had no clue what to look for as I did not mention the bone. We thought it may have been a poison or something. Just watch the dog for a day or so. And to all those who read this please don't give your dogs butcher bones, it's not worth the chance no matter how much they enjoy them. Chance |

I don't like giving tyhe rawhide bones with the knots. I find that our dogs will get big peices off of them and choke on them. With the pressed ones they can't do that and only get small pieces off.
Please do not buy and give your dog those real cooked bones they have at the stores, they are dangerous because they are COOKED. They splinter and can have a devastating affect on your dog. If you want to feed bonesm feed RAW only. Go the the butcher or the meat counter at the grocery store and ask for Knuckle bones, tell them theya re for a dog and to cut them fairly large , at least 6-8 inches in length. You will have nothing to worry about with these. |
