Great Dog Foods
Hi everyone! I know this is a topic that has been asked again and again and again and again and again and again.............
Just a few questions: We had been told that Wellness was a SOOOPER food and were buying it, but it's kinda hard to get by us. Only sold by Agway and their hours are not real good for working folk. PetSmart is easy for me and they sell Nutro, which I have heard is real good on this site. I got him Nutro Max, but was told it was Nutro's bottom of the barrell, so i'll go back to the Natural Choice. Now I have found a new store where I can get Wellness, but both my dog and cat seem to like Nutro, like, a million times better. they eat it faster and always finish the bowl...with the Wellness they leave a little behind. Is the Nutro Naturals good enough to stick to? They like it better, it's less expensive, and it's easier to get. But I also want to feed them the best. Sorry to bring up this topic again! |

I just want to mention.. why is it such a bad thing to leave behind a bit of food? I think it's good. They aren't over indulging themselves and becoming food obsessed.
I feel like being in the US with such an obese society, it's only natural to want our dogs to be beefier. They don't think about health issues related to this. They just think the dog is happier when bigger or thicker.. which isn't true. They can't run as fast, pant easier, etc. It's much healthier to have a dog who doesn't finish the bowl then scarfs it down. Plus, with scarfing comes GDV (Gastro Dilitation Volvulus) basically canine bloat. I would go back to Wellness. It's a good product. |

Read your labels. If the label says - Meat By-Products, Animal Fat, Tallow, Animal by products do not use it! Basically what those are, are- any kind of meat ranging from Euthanised animals such as Cats and Dogs to roadkill, diseased meat to any other meat not fit for human consumption.
You get for what you pay for. Nutro is a good commercial dog food. I do not feed commercial dog foods. I only feed a holistic RAW diet. But feeding the way we do is not for everyone and there are some good dog foods out there. Do your research you will be fine. |

Nutro is not such a bad brand, but if you're worried about the pets getting the nutrients, such as fatty acids for their coats, you can add that on your own.
I wouldn't worry if they left a little behind in their plate. For dogs what the usuall rule has been, whatever they eat in ten minutes is good. Cats on the other hand can be more tricky as they sometimes don't like to eat a full meal at one time. |

thanks! just wanted to make sure.....i feel really good about the wellness. we eat healthy ourselves and i want what's best for them also. we were feeding Innova for a while, but that's kind of hard to get too. i want to be realistic about what we can be consistent with.
since i know they like the Nutro and it's "forum approved" -- i'll keep it in mind as a stanby....i'm happy I can get the Wellness a bit easier. glad they can leave a little behind...maybe they need to eat less because they are getting more nutrients per meal? i don't know....just a guess. it also makes me think about the stuff we humans like the taste of, but isn't so good for us....chocolate, fast food, chips.... thanks again! |

Generally speaking the better the food the less the dog needs to eat. The better quality foods have less fillers and more digestable proteins etc in them. FYI my vet told me to feed a bit less than the packaging indicates the dog needs. Most companies, a lot of the better ones included increase their profit margins by telling consumers to feed a bit more than the dog actually needs. If your dog doesn't eat the full amount given him, just decrease a bit.

Nutro is a good food, however any food from a vet is better, anything like Purina, or Science diet is great Super food that will help any dog at any age. I wuld use it before anything else.

I don't think that vet food is better, it just means the vets get a percentage for backing a product.
Also, I don't think Purina is a good food. Most of their foods are filled with corn which is not doggie friendly. |

i will again recommend this site for those who wish to learn more about how to read labels. and, before you start the "it's so long" blah blah. get over it. if you really want to be knowledgable about what you are putting in your dog's bowl every day, read it. the language is not hard to follow. http://www.mordanna.com/dogfood/index.php?page=li101
and, for a wonderful article on why Science Diet is not a good food, please read this: http://www.ourdogsonline.com/index.php?section=27 |
