Ear Drops Problem

Well here we go. The first few times that I have put ear drops in Penny's ears she didn't mind them going in, but now she recognizes the bottle and she struggles so violently when I try to put the drops in her ears that I am afraid I am going to hurt her. Have felt her ears, have checked them and they don't seem to be any problems in her hears. Any clues how to handle this problem?

Why do you have to put them in? Does she have an infection? Or allegries?

No is to keep her ears clean of wax. Penny is a cocker spaniel and since they are prone to ear infections am following the vet's suggestion.

When I had to put drops in Poppy's ears I started out by letting her sniff the bottle, then I put it away. Then when she was tired after a walk and was laid on her bed I'd go sit down next to her and get the bottle out again and let her sniff it again, then I'd warm the bottle in my hands for a few mins whilst stroking her ears with my other hand and then put the drops in her ears. She doesn't mind the drops or the cleansing pads at all now.

I hope I haven't ruined it with Penny. Guess I will need to at least try and see if it will work.

Nope, I don't think you have ruined it with Penny - but these things take time. Now try doing eye drops on your own without anybody to hold her head still and eye open, that's a whole new ball game - lol

Be gently persistant---make it a game---make it fun---talk in a funny voice--just don't let her "win".

hmm...

the only thing that i can tell you to do, that works ( or at least for me) is to start with just her seeing the bottle, and you playing with her ears, then put the bottle close to her ears. Sometimes it the noise of the air inside the bottle , and not the liquid itself that intimidates them. After she hears the noice and doesn't freak, give her a treat. Repeat process, but this time put a small amount inside the ear. Then give her a treat for being good. If she resists, than start over from scratch, of you letting her see the bottle and you playing with her ears. don't make it seem scarey, but reashuring. The more the animal trusts you the more he/she won't fight.

My cocker hates to have stuff put in his ears, but he loves to eat! He will put up with it if he knows there is a piece of cheese waiting for him on the counter! Try putting your cocker in the sink so you have better control. This is how I brush his teeth, put in ear or eye drops.
