food question

I have bullmastiff cross rottweiler puppy that is 3 1/2 months old. I feed her 3 times a day, 2 cups in the morning, 1 1/2 in the after noon and 2 at night. I was wondering if that is too much and when i should start cutting back on her food? I know puppies are suppose to get fed often because they need the nutrition but i was wondering intill how old she was?...

faith is right. You should go by the manufacturer's directions for feeding, unless your vet tells you different for special diets.

Really it depends on the dog not the bag of dog food. Puppies need all the calories and protein. The bag says a sugested on average value, so if your pup is eating all the food in his dish in 15 minutes hes fine. as he gets older you can give more or less so hes not over wait or to lean. hope this helps.

i fed my dane Large breed puppy food until he was a Year . After they are fixed is usually when they are supposed to switch to adult food, but b/c large breed dogs are different than small i figured it best to make sure he was at a healthy weight.

Can you explain the reasons why you should move to adult food is after they are fixed - I've never heard of this before.

I feed Tess puppy food from my vets, she gets 1 1/2 cups three times a day. This is alittle more than the bag recomends because she is growing i figure it will help her. And the bag is just guidelines. Tess just got spayed and my vet never said anything about adult food.. He said puppy food until she is a year. She is a rotti dobbi cross. If your dogs food is on the ground for more than 25 minutes you should take it away. Other wise you will develope a snacker. Hope this helps you.

I would never feed a large breed puppy ,Puppy food.Mine are on adult at 8 weeks and make all my puppy people feed adult. You want them to grow slowly.
And you do not want a fat puppy. It is bad for the joints while growing.
You want a slow growing lean puppy(not thin)

You switch large breed dogs to adult food at 2 years because that is when large breeds are adults...small and medium dogs are adults at one year and should be switched. The only reason I have heard of to switch before then is if the dog is really hyper and then you can switch to adult a few months earlier if your vet suggests it like my mom had to do with her husky. I have never heard of switching after they are fixed. If you get a dog fixed at the proper time when they are a puppy than depending on the breed they still will have 6 months to a year and a half of puppyhood left.
