Pugs

I will be seeing a male pug this sunday, and wanted to get some addition opinions on these dogs. this dog is four and is being given away because her four year old has allergies. I am not making a snap decision here just because the dog is free, but I do want to go into this with my eyes wide open! So anybody have a pug, or stories they would like to share??
Thanks!

Sorry I don't know anything about Pugs (apart from the fact that they are incredibly cute)
Do you have any dogs at home already? That should influence your decision and then you should find out about the dogs personality, behaviour, health etc.
And make your choice based on your situation etc and keep in mind that the dog may be very upset at first as it's being taken away from the family it loves so you might have a bit of hard work on your hands.
Keep us updated!

I don't know much about pugs.

I know that their brachycephalic faces make it very hard for them to get sufficient excercise because they do not have the ability to breathe quickly. I also know that they are prone to obesity and eye injuries since their eyes stick out so much. And the ones I've known have been extremely food driven.

...That's about the extent of my knowledge. Good luck.

These are the couple things to keep in mind about pugs:

-As moo mentioned.. they are brachycephalic. In certain Pugs, if their noses have small nares some vets will want/can perform a plastic surgery type of surgery that cuts a piece of their nose and allows them to breathe more and better. Making all that snorting, panting, etc go away.
-Not sure if it's a female or not. BUT, some pugs have a fold around their vulva causing constant UTI's. This can also be handled surgically by removing that vulvular fold.
-They are definitely prone to obesity, as Moo said.
-They do not like to be held. Some do.. but most do not. They are VERY wiggly creatures and somewhat independent.

Good luck with your choices.

Well thank's for the great info guys, when I went to look on the ckc's web about them it def didn't tell me some of those things, I have two shih-Tzu's and I think that they would be extremely put out with the appearance of another family member. My first concern though is if the dog is aggressive in anyways or not.(bad experience) I am not 100% into getting another dog but I agreed to see him.(it is a male). So I don't know what to expect. I will ask the owner if she had an allergy test done on her son to see if he really is allergic to the pup. That is why she is getting rid of him. Soooo anyways I'll let you all know on Monday about the visit. I had told her I wanted several visits, and a home trial to see what is like. Other than that I don't know what else to do.

Cheers!!!! & Thanks!!

Well I went to see the pug, and I also came home with a pug! He is home with me for thurs - Sun. Then the family is picking him up and meeting the rest of my family, they will take him for the week and then bring him back for another weekend. And then we will decide if he will fit into the whole family. He had a really good sleep last night, he was on his back on the bed snoring away! He is a food hound so, that is going to take some getting used to since all of our animals are free fed.

My brother has two very cute Pugs. His two love to be cuddled. They
shed A LOT and snore like crazy. He has to keep the skin folds around their noses clean so they don't get yeast infections.

Their names are Curly and Moe ..... my brother's name is Larry! Isn't that cute??

we have aquaintances that have a pug and he's a friendly enough dog. however, he's a serious alpha male and runs the house. they can't put anything on the floor or he'll pee on it. they don't address it because the idiot breeder they got him from told them "all pugs are like that."

the only other thing i really know about him is that he snores horribly. but, because i don't live there i think it's cute/funny.
