Charlee Bear Treats
I received a sample packet of liver flavored Charlee Bear treats used for training purposes (only has 3 calories) and they are the size of maybe a nickel or a bit smaller. My question is ingredients listed in order are wheat flour, liver preserved withTocopherols (source of vitamin E) salt and garlic powder....sigh. If garlic is so bad for dogs why do people put it in their treats? Should I NOT feed these to her?

Its up to you personally I wouldnt feed anything with added salt or garlic, it does take quite a lot of garlic to cause poisioning but I dont take the risk

i've been wondering about this. i have found a few references to garlic being toxic to dogs, but not in any place that i consider reliable (mostly just on personal web pages).
i've also seen it listed as an effective treatment to worms on some medical sites. some of the medical sites seem to think that in small/moderate doses it poses no health issues for pets. but, i'm curious if anyone here has done any research on it and what they'll have to say. |

I don't know much about it but seeing as Penny is only a puppy, I personally wouldn't take the risk.

Actaually garlic can be poisinous to dogs. I myself find that it depends on the dog. I give garlic pills once a day to my guys to help with fleas, flys, mosquitos, and ticks because I live near a wooded area. It really helps and that is the only time they get it. I have never had a problem with this. I even talked to my vet about it and he said as long as it is not bothering the dogs then I can keep giving it to them. I think its one of those things that everyone has their own opinion on. I have seen onions used in some dog treats. I had a dog that used to eat onions, if it fell on the floor she ate it. She never did get sick from it. I would not intentionally give them to her, but she would be right there when you were cutting them.

I forgot to add something. For training I use dog food. My dogs eat Flint River Fish and Chips for their food, so I get either the puppy and adult or the lamb food. They like it and they actually think its a treat. Sometimes instead of feeding them at night I train and feed them their dinner as we train.

Actually if it comes from my hand Penny thinks its a treat.
Dog food, spinach, cantalope, carrots......well everything except for lettice. She thinks she is suppose to shred that to pieces and spread it around the living room. Silly girl!!!
