Karelian Bear Dog
Someone was advertising puppies of this breed in the paper today. I know of them and I also know they do not make the best family pets, so I found it rather distrubing that they would put them into a newspaper.
The Karelian is a gorgeous dog ! Here have a look ! Karelian Bear Dog BIS Ch. TsarShadow's Forest Lord. The heart of a lion, the look of eagles. Bred/owned by Dawne Deeley, TsarShadow Reg'd, 11060 Rosborough Rd., Sidney, BC V8L 5M3. Origin: The Karelian Bear Dog is the big-game hunting canine of the Finnish people. Huntsmen use the dog to hunt bear, elk, moose, deer and wolf. The breed originated in the area of northern Europe known as Karelia and the isolation and remoteness of eastern Finland ensured that the breed remained relatively untouched until the 20th century. World War II nearly put an end to the breed but dedicated enthusiasts set out to re-establish this intelligent and courageous hunter. Temperament: This is a breed with laser-sharp senses and extreme resourcefulness. A 'work-bred' Karelian can be particularly belligerent in its response to other dogs, a quality that makes the breed unsuitable for most urban situations. In its favour, the Karelian is known to be very devoted to its owner and a dog of tremendous genetic soundness. Activity level: A true working dog, the Karelian demands outdoor exercise and is happiest with a hunter or outdoorsman. It is definitely not the breed for everyone, but those who have worked with a Karelian rarely consider another breed. Height/Weight: The medium-sized Karelian may range from 19-23.5 in (48-60 cm) at the withers. Coat: The Karelian has a straight, stiff and thick outer coat that is slightly longer on the neck, back and rear of thighs. A soft, dense undercoat provides insulation. Colour: The dog is black with distinct white markings on the head, neck, chest, abdomen and legs. The preferred black has a brownish cast or may be a dull matte black. Grooming: Regular brushing is needed to remove dead hair and keep the coat healthy. Please note: the hunt-bred Karelian Bear Dog does not make a suitable 'all-round' family pet - but as big-game hunters they are unsurpassed. Is the breed right for you?

He is a strong beautifuil looking dog. I have never heard of this breed, but I do think its sad that someone would just advertise them in a local paper so anyone could come and take one.
I have a strong belief with any sort of dog cross or pure that you should be screened to make sure you fit the dogs reuirements. And the breeders! Makes me think the breeder just doesnt care. |

they are sure beautiful and powerful looking dogs, but it sounds like not the best family pet. too bad people are idiots and don't research their breed beforehand. (also dob, the people who put the add in the paper might be real idiots who don't know what breed they actually have?) just trying to think positive, they might have some cute spitz's or something?

The CKC only list one breeder in BC in Canada. I have not seen them anywhere expect in shows.
So many people don't do their research into a breed before buying them. That is where you get the bad owner = bad dog, thing. |

This alone says not a family pet....they'd have alot of frustration if they weren't working! |

There are alot of breeds out there like this yet people buy them and try to make them house hold pets. They are not Goldens or lads. This dogs need people who can handle them and give them something to do.

Being a Beauceron owner, and having met many Karis I can tell you that they are NOT a pet. Yes, beautiful, but not for the average home.

These breed was shown on Animal Planet before. This group of people use them to scare bears away so that the bears aren't harmed nor are any people. The bark scares the bears away. They seem to like bein out a lot and they are very vocal.
