update on Lucy

When I got home from work Lucy (who stayed away from the pups for the day – my choice not hers) was clearly 100% filled with milk. Her utters were visibly swollen to capacity – a touched them and she immediately had her nose right there, she must have been in some pain. I brought her to the pups pen and let her in, they all immediately latched on and she stood there (never laid down) and let them drain her. After about 10 minutes Lucy hopped out and her utters were drained and she seemed much happier. Of course her belly is all red and scratched up from the pups nails and teeth.

I called my vet and they didn’t have an opening – but would see Lucy if I thought it an emergency, since she let the pups feed and is not about to explode with milk, has a normal appetite and is playful and acting normal I decided to not push the panic button. I have the appointment next Friday for Lucy and all 8 pups – provided everything remains status quo we will wait it out.

In the meanwhile these 8 pups have 64 square feet and they are still ****-bent on escaping from the pen. The walls are 2 feet high and in one section I have it bout 4 inches less for Lucy to climb in and out. These little pups are actually able to claw their way over this section and poop on my carpet ! I need to work on a fix this weekend.

Can you clip the pups nails? That would at least prevent them from scratching her all up. There's obviously not much you can do about the teeth.

I have clipped them once – was a challenge. I picked up some sandpaper (from a pet store – I think its for birds). I have built a playpen and attached it to the whelping box. I made a ramp for the pups to go in and out of the box….so I put this sandpaper on the up and down slope of the ramp in an effort to naturally wear the nails. So far it seem to be working well and no pup is being irritated on he pad (which was my main concern)

Clipping nails is best done when they are sleeping.
I start at 1 week old with them sleeping in my lap and clip every week some times twice a week. That way the new owner wont have to fight so hard to clip them later.
