{Well I had a poll and last time I checked the Boxer was the winner.
So im going to do a breed page on the breed. One of my interests in dogs, is the history of dog breeds. So I decided to do a thread on the Boxer dog. Enjoy. I found alot of interesting information.} Boxer Blunt face, steady gaze with a hint of mischief, an undeniable joy of life, and incredible grace, the Boxer is affectionate to children and a steadfast friend and guardian to the whole family. Low maintenance? The Boxer is a clean canine with a short coat that needs little more than a wipe-down and an occasional bath. Intelligence? The Boxer scores well in the smarts department. Versatility? The Boxer does well in obedience, agility, and therapy work and has served credibly as a war dog and a police dog. The ancestors of the Boxer dog were known since the 16th century. It was however due to selective breeding by George Alt of Munich, Germany in the 1880's that produced the beginnings of this popular breed. Breeding a small Bullenbeiser bitch to a local Bullenbaiser dog, both of which were Mastiff type dogs now extinct, produced a parti-colored dog subsequently bred to an English Bulldog. That breeding produced a male and female. The male was shown later on became the first Boxer dog entered into the German Stud Book. The sister, a white bitch produced a daughter, Meta von der Passage. Most Boxer dogs today trace thier heritage back to this bitch. Today, white puppies are often born but a white boxer is not acceptable according to the breed standard which recongnizes fawn and brindle colors only. In fact it is a dis-qualification for Boxers with a total of white markings exceeding one-third of the entire coat. The head of the dog is of utmost importance and has become more refined in Britain and North America than its European counterpart. The Boxer is a medium size dog, square built, of good substance, short back, strong limbs, and well developed muscles. The gait is energetic, the stride free and ground covering, the carriage proud. Instictively a guard dog, his bearing is alert, dignified self-assured. With family and friends, his temperament is playful, patient, stoical and loving of children. They are wary with strangers, exhibits curiosity but, most importantly, fearless courage if threatened. Grooming a Boxer Pup or adult just requires periodic brushing, and for excerise, good daily walk. The intelligence and loyal affection, willingness to learn, make a Boxer pup a desirable companion. Obedience training is worthwhile for your young Boxer pup because an untrained one can become unruly and destructive. Dog: 65-80 lbs. Height: 22 1/2- 25 in. Bitch: 50-65 lbs Height: 21-23 1/2 Watchdog: Good Protection: Good Life Expectancy: 8-10 years ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by GermanShepherds; 10-28-2005 at 11:23 AM. |
