raw hide

My vet gave me raw hide the instant I took Cleo there for her very first checkup at ten weeks old. Now, my friend told me that her vet told her that raw hide is horrible for dogs and that it just sits in their stomachs and won't digest. I haven't seen any negative affects in Cleo after she has raw hide, and she loves it. Any feedback? THANKS!!!!

Amy

Thats a good thread.
I think every dog is different. Some do fine with it, and some dont.
I only give rawhide when I am around, never leave them unattended.

Sam didn't get rawhide, and I was going to avoid it for his entire life... and then we got "awards" at obediance, and I realized how much that he likes it. Now, he gets one that is an "outside only" thing (because I don't like the slimy part).

I was sticking to the non-"bone" shaped ones, and am back to doing that. At a weekend camping trip a while ago, someone gave him a bone shaped one, and I left that for him to eat for a few days, and he never would touch the knuckle parts.

So, he gets the long stick ones, and has not had a problem with the 5 that he's eaten.

I agree with dobermom about supervising and some dogs do fine. I give Chopper it and he is fine with it but I also think it should only be an occasional treat.

Pressed rawhide bones are the safest to give.

With the knotted ones, the sticks, the chopped moulded, you run the risk of the dog swallowing pieces of it whole. Actually the knotted are really bad for a dog being able to get the knot off and swallow that.

Like Dobermom says supervise you dog when they are eating rawhides.

I really dont have an answer for you. Every dog is different. Some react negatively to it, some are just fine.

I agree with everyone saying all dogs are differnt. Best thing is if you are uncertain than only give it to him when you are home and can watch him. My vet told me rawhides are ok, but that i should stay away from the Greenie treats, b/c they splinter and can get caught in the throat, or, can cause horrible stomach and dierreah....

You just have to go with what you feel is best, if you don't feel comfortable giving it her then there are lots of other treats out there instead. Always supervise your dog with any treats such as rawhide and give the safer pressed ones to avoid problems.
