Accidents - advice?

Ok, we adopted a cocker spaniel (aprox 2-3yrs old) on 9/5/03. She was with a fostor home from 8/26/03 and prior to that at a shelter for 10 days (she was found as a stray). While at the foster home she was perfectly house trained and well mannered and never cried. When we brought her home she was excellent, she only had small accidents when she got excited (when we got home or someone new was over) we quickly corrected that by greating her in a very calm manner and gradually showing her attention. So by day 3 she was fine. We had her spayed on 9/16/03 and picked her up at the vet on 9/17/03. Ever since then she has had multiple accidents, and I don't think they are so much accidents, for example I took her out and she did nothing as soon as I brought her in she went pee. If we leave for an hour she cries. She had an accident while we were at work yesterday but she has no problems holding her bladder all night (no night time accidents). Our first thought was a Urinary tract infection but the vet said the atibotic we are giving her for the surgery would of killed that.

So thank you for taking the time to read, since this is our first dog we are unsure of what to think. We are hoping it is just her reponse to the surgery experience (the vet seems to think that is NOT it?).

Any thoughts???

It could be that she has less bladder control right now because of pain from the surgery. It could also be that she's just upset/angry about it. Hopefully she will fall back into her old routine.

Not to question your cleaning tecniques, but when she pees, in the house do you use a cleaner such a resolve or such that kills the scent? It sounds like if she goes out, does nothing then comes in and pees, she may be confused about where she is supposed to go..when leaving her alone, do you leave a radio on or some sort of noise? Does she have plenty of toys to help keep her mind off being lonely?

Thanks for the reply. We actually do use resolve on the carpet area followed by a pet store spray. On the hard wood floors and tile we use lysol and/or the clorox wipes. We do leave the TV on and leave her toys (which she does not play with at all (never has since we have had her and I tried mutiple toys, even the kong filled treats).

Thanks - I took her to the vet by gjp, 9/21/03

The vet said it could be a slight infection to the bladder while teh spay was taking place and gave us some meds. BUT now for the past 2 nights she went #2 IN HER BED!! Both nights it was just one formed piece. We removed the bed cover and washed it yesterday and I just did the same today. TOday I even sprayed the foam with a pet store oder remover. She had neve doen that. FYI - We took her out at 10:00 last night and she just peed but she did #2 around 7:45pm????

Maybe she's having a bad emotional experience from being taken to the vets. My first dog did crazy things when we brought him home from the humane society. Also - he would get really upset if we changed routines (like went away for the day).

Does she make the messes when you're watching her? Maybe while you're gone try having a friend or family member come over and stay with her for a while. I get someone to come sit with my dogs if I'm going to be gone more than 2-3 hours. This way they don't feel like they're being abandoned.

I would suggest taking her back to the vet. That can be a sign of something seriously wrong particularly if you already suspect her of having an internal infection. Or it could be that she needs her meds changed.
