Spaying Questions

I have a few questions for when I get Penny spayed. I know that I could ask the vet when it is time (about a month from now), but I would rather ask people who have had the surgery done and afraid I will forget what questions I have by then.

1. Do they keep the dog overnight?

2. Does she have stitches that she could pull out if not watched?

3. What is approx cost of spaying? -- Not that it matters the poor little one is getting spayed no matter what.

4. Will she be put on any type of restrictions regarding diet, exercise, etc?

5. Are there medications that I will have to give her, such as antibiotics?

6. Is she going to hold me responsible for her feeling icky poo and make me feel guilty for the rest of my life ?

7. Anyone have any clues how to help make her more comfortable when I get her home?

8. Any other answers without the questions would be greatly appreciated.

Ariel stayed overnight. It is standard procedure here but it depends on the vet. Some release the dog same day and you get a groggy dog. By the time I picked Ariel up the next day, I knew she had gone to the bathroom and was wide awake. She was a little subdued but that's it.

I had her done with a laser and it reduced recovery to 1/3 (10 days). She was to be kept from rough housing, and the area kept dry. There were no stitches for her to "get at" and internally she had dissolving ones.

I believe it cost about $600. I had two free follow up visits for what was minor infections in the stitches that didn't dissovle all the way and because we had rain rain rain so it was impossible to keep it dry.

I've never had a dog associate the pain with me. They are quite happy to see me and come home. Within a day or two, they don't even act like it hurts. Dogs are very tough creatures.

I've never had a truly bad experience.

As for making her feel more comfortable, you can give metacam or baby aspirin to ease the discomfort if she needs it. Just try to keep her calm for at least a couple of days and all should be fine.

TY for answering so quickly. Will admit to being a nervous nelly, but if you think this is bad....wait until day of surgery. I will have to chat with the vet and see if he will do it with a laser as I myself know (from several surgeries) that laser is the way to go and if it will help Penny heal faster and be more comfortable then I am all for it.

Keep Penny calm? Now you are asking for the impossible. We are talking about the puppy who likes to chase a pointer light up and down the hall, through the kitchen and into the livingroom and doesn't even realize that I have stopped the light for about 2-3 minutes and she continues to run. (

IcyMist usualy your dog will not have to stay overnight. Keep her from jumping, keep her calm, no ruff play. You cant bathe her till the stitches come out. antibiotics prob wont be needed they might ask you if you want pain meds. The cost around here in KY is 90-120. Hope this helps

I just had Sally done in an emergency with no time to prepare, she did excellent. She was only given antibitioc for 5 days came home same day when she was alert enough to walk to the auto. My vet is good not to keep dogs over so they can come home and recope better with family. Do not get it wet or dirty till it heals, keep her sleeping on her pillow or whatever and she will be fine. I would not give anything the vet has not given for her as most do not need anything. Sally had big clamps also. They looked bad, but she did so well with loosing her pups are all that I bottle fed.

You might want to have a friend bring her in. Friends of mine have had their dogs not want to even be near them because the dogs thought that they did it to them. If you pick her up she will think thank god you saved me. I hope this makes sense. lol.

My responses apply to my vet in the UK but I thought others might be interested too!

1. Do they keep the dog overnight?

My vet does not keep dogs overnight, unless they had serious complications.

2. Does she have stitches that she could pull out if not watched?

They use internally dissolving ones and "glue" for the outside!

3. What is approx cost of spaying? -- Not that it matters the poor little one is getting spayed no matter what.

My vet is very reasonable and it will cost me $245 US but some vets over here charge by the weight of the dog when she is spayed and so would charge me $385 US...

4. Will she be put on any type of restrictions regarding diet, exercise, etc?

The sheet I have from our vets says to offer water every hour and if the dog seems lively to offer a bland diet of cooked rice and chicken or buy a special convalescant (sp) from them. Only on leash walks for 5-7 days after surgery.

5. Are there medications that I will have to give her, such as antibiotics?

Don't know about this, I guess it depends if there are any infections etc. They might give you something for the pain. If you don't mind using homeopathy then the homepathic remedy arnica is good for pain relief.

6. Is she going to hold me responsible for her feeling icky poo and make me feel guilty for the rest of my life ?

Yep, you bet she is - just kidding!

7. Anyone have any clues how to help make her more comfortable when I get her home?

Give her loads and loads of hugs and kisses from all her doggy friends here at PD...

8. Any other answers without the questions would be greatly appreciated.

My last question is - when do we get to see more picture of her

Everybody here has answered everything, but I thought aspirin is dangerous to dogs? (anticoagulant?)

Anyways, my dog is still holding me responsible for leaving her at the spay place and hasn't forgiven me yet!!! (3 years later)

Q. Do they keep the dog overnight?
A. They did not keep my dog overnight. She wasn't allowed to eat for 12 hours prior to surgery though.

Q. Does she have stitches that she could pull out if not watched?
A. Mine did have stitches... I put an e-collar on her for the first day and then after that she was fine. They did not use the glue because some dogs lick it or bother it just as much - and that way they can take them out and can see how it is healing

Q. What is approx cost of spaying? -- Not that it matters the poor little one is getting spayed no matter what.
A. Mine was close to 500$ (but she weighed over a certain amount, which made it cost considerably more). They gave options though - like pain killers during/after, using a laser or a knife, having an IV hooked in just in case. There may have been a couple others, but those are the ones I remember. I took all the extra options/upgrades.

Q. Will she be put on any type of restrictions regarding diet, exercise, etc?
A. They asked that we avoid stairs for 48 hours and try not to let her be too overly active. The stairs worked for about 24 hours but then with the pain killers, she didn't care/didn't listen, broke down the baby gates and did what she wanted to do.

Q. Are there medications that I will have to give her, such as antibiotics?
A. Pain killers were optional for us. I opted to have them - I figured I don't like pain, why would my dog

Q. Is she going to hold me responsible for her feeling icky poo and make me feel guilty for the rest of my life ?
A. My dog seems to forget she even had it done! It's been 4 months since she's had her spaying. After the 2nd or 3rd day she really didn't seem to notice or show any signs of having been through that.

Q. Anyone have any clues how to help make her more comfortable when I get her home?
A. Since she wasn't allowed to do stairs, we camped out downstairs with her. She was pretty sleepy, so we watched tv and she slept for most of it.

Q. Any other answers without the questions would be greatly appreciated.
A. When I had Denali spayed, I was a nervous wreck. I dropped her off, my vet called me after the procedure and told me everything was fine and that I could pick her up in 1 or 2 hours because they wanted to wait for her to wake up/monitor her just a little bit longer. The same day we had it done, Denali was back to puppy pads then the next day she just wanted everything to be normal again.

Our vet is a little pricier than the others in the area - but they seem to know more about the breed. When I was looking - I always asked the vet if they have Great Pyrenees patients, if they didn't seem to even know what a Pyr was, they were out.

If you think of anything else - don't hesitate to ask!!
