Unhappy Cat Litter

Ok ... Here is the story. My dog has suddenly became atticted to kitty litter. He eats it and goes into the box and will just eat it. I know it is gross but what do I do? I dont want him to be sick or anything but he will just come into my room and eat the litter and the poop. I have now a rule that he cannot lick me anymore. but it is just gross and the litter is very expensive and I am worried about my dog .. What do I do .. Please help me ..

Bianca

What kind of litter box do you have (coverd or non coverd)? Is there a room where you can put it where kitty can go but doggie can'r?

I have a covered .. but he will stick his head in the box. I am not sure at the moment because my mom just moved in.. I think we can put it in the bathroom or the closet but he can get into it ..

LOL !! Kitty Krunchies...

Sorry have to laugh, my female Dobe, Jenna, use to do that all the time. She would sneak into the room where the litter box is and grab some kitty krunchies and then pretend like nothing happened. Well she had litter all over her nose, so when she came to see us she was busted.

Jenna was scolded everytime she did is, I took her back over to the box and sat her down and told her she was bad, adn NO. In a loud and stern voice. After a while she stopped.

Booda Step

Looks like something my dogs would get into in a heartbeat if they wanted what was inside.

How about spraying it with bitter apple? Isn't there a cat litter that dogs don't like to eat?

Ken.. The litter is over to the right and it's pretty deep so he would have to get more the his head in there to grab a snack and also the top locks on so the dog could't knock the top off.

It is not the litter the dog is interested in it is what the cats leave behind.

Tootsie roll stealer! I have one of those. But what Dobified said was right, it is not the litter but the stinky treats that they love. As explained to me when I first had litter box raiders, dogs look at cat poop not as poop, but as the tuna they eat, the salmon in their food, etc and that still smells good to a dog. Even though I think it is the most replusive thing a dog can do.

My only advice, which I have done, is make the litter box inaccessible. Mine used to be in the bathroom before I move (and now that cats have their own room) but I put a screw in the door frame and then took a dog choke collar (I have lots to spare) and looped it around the door know and then attached it to the screw with just enough room for the cats to get in but not the dogs. But I have labs, which are much bigger than my cats. If you have a little dog, not sure if that would help.
