Benefits of Early Spay, what do you think?
My puppy is getting to be 16 week next week.
What is your opinion on earlier spraying her? I would planned to get operation on her 17 week, If the earlier is better for her. Here what I found on Internet: The Benefits of Early Spay and Neutering(spaying and neutering as early as 8 weeks of age) It has been the long time recommendation by most veterinarians that cats and dogs be at least 6 months of age before they are spayed or neutered. Although pediatric spays and neuters have been performed safely and successfully for the last 20 years, it is only recently that more veterinarians are adopting this standard. Less Bleeding The young puppy or kitten is not yet fully developed; therefore, the blood vessels of the ovaries, uterus, and testicle are smaller and have minimal bleeding. Excellent Visualization Adequate visualization of the ovaries and uterus is essential when spaying a female cat or dog. In the adult animal there is often layers of fat tissue in the abdomen and around the organs that makes visualization sometimes difficult. In the puppy there is almost no fat at all. The ovaries and uterus along with the arteries is clearly seen. Elastic Tissue Because the tissues in and puppies are not yet fully developed, it is easy to manipulate without fear of tearing the tissue or a blood vessel. Less Stitching Again, since the tissues are less developed in puppies, less stitches are required, which means less surgery time. Less surgery time mean less time under anesthesia. Fewer Drugs Required The smaller the patient, the less anesthesia is needed. Quicker Recovery Times Because less anesthesia is required, recoveries from surgery are quicker. Also, puppies have a faster metabolism, which helps rid the body of drugs more quickly. Most pediatric patients are up and walking within an hour of surgery and eating within two hours of surgery. Near Zero Complications Puppies are no more likely to have complications due to surgery and anesthesia than are animals 6 months and older. Less Healing Time Required Puppies grow at a remarkable speed, which helps them heal much faster than older pets. |

Good info. My family has always had females (I now have a male Chihuahua) and we've always had our females spayed early. It's easiest to just get it over with and they seem to recover quite easily.

nods, thats a safe time to do it, some vets won't though untill they are 5 months or close to 6 but others do it as early 3 months. So i think you would be safe =)

I had Daisy spayed at 6 months and she went through it with flying colours. No problems at all and was running around the next day.

Penny's vet won't spay her until she is 5 months old, so looks like she will have to wait another month.

There are pros and cons of both spaying early and after a season you have to do what you and your vet thinks best

Going to wait
Hi, all.
We are going to wait on procedure being DONE until Alisa going to be at least 5 month. That is Banfield corporation rules. Vet saying, that in shelters he performing the same operation on 8 weeks puppies. But here in Banfield - you have to wait until your puppy is 5 month old. Not a biggi, will wait. But we have done rabbies last time we saw the doctor. We are almost ready for the Dog-Run park!

I have always thought the best time to spay a female dog is after her first heat but before a second.

Pomlover - some vets discourage this because, after a dog has gone through a heat cycle all of their organs become inflamed making it more difficult to go in and do abdominal surgery.
