soup stock
since faith really enjoys her food more when it's a bit moist, i've been adding a few tablespoons of soup stock to it. she loves it and gobbles it up. but, after reading the label closely, i realized the one i'd been using is loaded with salt.
so, for those of you who cook for their dogs (or even themselves) how do you make a soup stock that you can control the ingredients? i want to get the chicken or beef flavoring without the salt. Last edited by Faith; 11-12-2005 at 04:27 AM. |

Go to the supermarket and buy an ox tail. It should be cut up into small one or two inch pieces. Place the tail on a metal cake pan. Add two inch celery stalks and two inch carrots pieces (about six each) and a little garlic if you like no more than 1/2 tsp. Place this concoction in the oven at 350 degrees for two hours. It will be dry and brown when it comes out. Add enough water to deglaze the pan and let it set to cool. Strain the vegetables and meat away from the broth. Add more water. You now have home cooked broth for your dog. (BTW you can remove the meat from the bone and put it into the stock if you want)Bon Apetite

Why not boil your own. My sister routinely takes turkey bones (left over from our meals) and boils the bones. She strains it, then freezes it. You could use left over chicken bones, pork chop bones, etc. It doesn't take much to add some flavor. to water.
Better yet, you can add vegtables for more nutrients. |

b/c my father has to watch his salt intake, i was told that the chicken or bee bulon cubs ( with low sodium or no sodium) works better. But you can always just boil water and checken bones together to make a sutible stock if you didn't want any salt at all.
