My oldest dog Buddy, the cocker spaniel...will not let me clip his nails..i've heard that they have very tender feat and don't like anything to bother their feet...and i've taken that into consideration..but he bit me hard the other night when I tried to clip them..and they are getting way to long, but I'd hate to have a dog groomer to do and us have to pay, when i know how to do it myself, I clip the other dogs nails just fine...any suggestions?

i would play with his feet a little ... I mean, mess with his feet by handling them and massaging between the pads. This will make your dog feel more secure about having his feet touched. After doing this for a little while, show your cocker the nail clippers. usually its the sound the clippers make that freaks them out. However, after you show the clippers and your dog allows you to play with his feet, than give a treat ( rewards are the best way of positive re-inforcment of things they don't like or want to do). Then after your dog is secure with that try to clip one toe followed by a treat if he does well.. this might help =) good luck

Are you doing this alone? Could someone hold your dog to reassure? Aria is right in her advice, but it can take some time to re-train an older dog. Sometimes dogs react better to a dremmel tool better than the nail clips. You can get a small one for around $15.00.If someone holds your dog, be sure that they put their whole arm under the dogs chin/neck, that way he can't bite. You don't need to hold so tight as to choke him. Good luck!

Go with Aria's advise. Praise him and talk to him while you play with his feet. Don't even bring the clippers into the picture until he is comfortable with his paws being handled. |
