Which Breed?

My mom and I are moving into town and so the dogs I have will have to stay at the farm with my dad. I love border collies, but am starting to wonder if they will be harder to keep busy, and if I want a smaller breed. Anyone who owns a bc want to give advice? I also would like a smaller dog, but am not sure which breeds I'd be interested in. Any suggestions would help. Shelties are great, but I don't know where to find mixes. I am almost afraid to adopt from shelter again, my previous dog still has a cough that she developed there.
Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Border collies are not town dogs. They need open spaces to run around off-leash and dont adapt well to living in towns. It is also recommended by almost every expert in the world not to have a border collie if you dont intend to work them (herding/serious competing in flyball/obediance/agility etc)
I would recommend something less demanding but it doesnt necessarily have to be smaller.
If you really like collies then try a shetland sheepdog. Cavalier King Charles spaniels are lovely even-tempered dogs. Greyhounds also make good town dogs, as do Clumber spaniels, norwich/norfolk terriers, whippets and english bull terriers.

We just adopted a 10 month old border collie mix from a rescue shelter two weeks ago. He is medium size and weighs 36 lbs. This is the first dog we have ever had and I can tell you he is the absolute greatest pet ever!! He is sooo smart and so loveable. He does like to play but when we tell him we have had enough he manages to keep himself busy or just goes to sleep. He is very energetic on the leash and does pull hard (we are going to go to obedience training next month) so a fence is an absolute must. Good luck! [img]smile.gif[/img]

Border collies can be town dogs so long as they get enough mental stimulation and decent exercise.

As for breeds to consider greyhounds are great town dogs as they are very lazy. Most smaller breeds will make good town dogs but really it is down to the individual dog rather than the breed. There are always exceptions to the rules.

Thank you for all of your advice. I do plan to do dog agility, and still love border collies. I believe that as long as I get a mix I should be ok. Greyhounds are also a nice breed that I will consider.
