    Raw fish for dogs

Everytime my dad makes fish, he gives the leftover pieces to my dog and cats...I always thought this was bad for them but he doesnt think so so what I am asking is...is raw fish bad for him?

He is right, raw fish is very good for them.

I give fish to our dogs when it is available cheap. Fish is expensive here, just about evey kind of fish is so when we buy it we eat it ! LOL!!! But when I am fishing and catch some I usually give them raw fish or like I said if I can find cheap smelts or something.

I have never knew you could give dogs fish. After turkey day, our dogs and cats get the extras. Sometimes we get our dogs canned chicken, that is in water.

Raw salmon isn't exactly good for dogs in large quantities. I can't remember everything I read about it but if you give it often it can cause some kind of anemia.

Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition seen in dogs that eat certain types of raw fish. Salmon (salmonid fish) and other anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to breed) can be infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola. Overall, the parasite is relatively harmless. The danger occurs when the parasite itself is infected with a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. Itís this microorganism that causes salmon poisoning. BUT it is rare and is generally only a problem in the Pacific Northwest.

I give my girls fish once or twice a week (usually salmon) but I wouldn't give it much more than that. They love it and do very well with it raw and cooked.

salmon is not good for dogs but other fish IS good for them in SMALL amounts.
The same does not apply to cats however, cats should not be fed fish.

Could you tell me why salmon isn't good for dogs? And also how much do you mean when you say fish is only good in small amounts? Thanks!

Salmon is EXCELLENT for dogs, and just like people dogs need the omega 6 and the other nutrients in it. We give salmon oil because fresh salmon is expensive in a land locked Province. We may have 100,000 lakes but salmon are ocean going fish and we don't have thme here, hence the price.

Eskimo dogs, husky's, mal's, Canadian Eskimo, that are actual sled dogs, are all fed fish as the largest part of their diets, along with seal, walrus etc etc etc, all raw.

Cats also can be fed fish with no issues. I don't feed it large amounts but my cats do get it once in awhile.

Lou3 please provide links to prove what you are saying. Cats do fine eating some fish, many cat foods are made of fish.
