Are they what you expected

This is inspired from Meisti's "No good deed..." thread.

I have met many breeds who definately did not fit with my expectations based on what I had heard/read about them.

I know Akita's that are big goof balls, I know Dalmations that I consider crazy, I know aggressive labs, etc.

How much does gossip and misinformation color our perspections and once you meet an actual representative of the breed were you surprised.

Most of the breeds I did research on I met before and got to know them, but I wanted to know the whole history not just what one person told me.
I think if you really read up on the history of the breed you will pretty much know what to expect. You don't have to own one to know one,but you should never stop learning.

I think it REALLY variably depends on WHO/WHERE you get your information from. Some descriptions of a breed I have found accurate, where others.....I don't even know where they come up with the stuff

All my purebreds have been what I expected. Especially my English Setter pup. She is a big love and the best dog I have ever seen with kids. A little goofy and slow at learning things but was what I expected. Of course I have heard some of the breeders are not watching temperaments. grrrrrr. that makes me so mad.

My breeder said to watch my girl ringside. She has had her ES attacked by other ES. Sad to hear about such a neat breed. My breeder doesn't tolerate bad temperaments or dogs that don't pass health requirments.
Really good breeders make the big difference!!!

My Bernese Mountain dogs fit the description well!

My Beaucerons... read the American standard... no they don't fit it, read the French personality description they fit in perfectly! but considering they are imports...

Kota met and exceeded my expectations. When I owned husky's one of mine did not meet the standard that I had in mind. But I later found out that it was bad breeding.

When we recieved our first collie, a very pregnant Star, we hadn't really been around the breed too often. I had always loved them and thought that I knew all there was to know. Not that I was expecting Lassie, but no one ever told me how great of a sense of humor collies had. I expected they would be loving, sweet dogs. But, never had I expected to laugh so hard at my dog who was trying to get me to laugh that I would have severe stomach cramps. I never thought I would be sitting at work and burst into laughter, nearly bringing tears to my eyes, because pf something Faith did.

I've never known goofier dogs than rough collies. And I never expected smooth collies to be so different from roughs. I've had a rottie mix, a dobe, a whippet, a kusvas, a lab, shepherds, wolf hybrid, sami mix, wolfhound (before I can remember) and I'm sure there are more. But never, have I laughed so hard.

It depends on what breed of dog and who you hear it from.
