Can rottis live outside?

I have a small problem, my wife does not like my dog. She is a 7 month old rotti dobi cross. She weighs 65 lbs. I live in saskatchewan were it goes down to -30 C. Tess (the dog) has a big dog house with a bale of straw in it. Can she be an outside dog in the winter? I dont want this to happen but i think it might. I could put a heat lamp in her dog house, im just not sure about the cold nights. My mom has a retiever that lives outside without a heated dog house and she does just fine, but she is also long haired. Would this be okay for my dog?

Why doesnt your wife like the dog? And if she wants her to sleep outside tell her to try out the kennel first for the night with just the straw and no blankets.

What about putting her in a different room for the night? Like the spare bedroom or the bathroom with all the windows shut and a nice doggy bed.

No that wouldn't be okay! It would be horrible, Rottie's need to be indoors anyway but especially in winter! I agree, you should put her in a different room or work something else out.

No way! It isn't even about the cold. It's about the dog's social health. They NEED to be with family.

LOL that what i was thinking!......I think this guy should find a new home for this rottie, you wouldn't want that gorgeous dog turn vicious if he is living outdoors. They need socialization..... whatever happend with communicating with the wife about what breed they want? and come to a mutual compromise?.

For the longest time before i met my hubby, i really like Chihuauas and was planning on getting one of my own. But my husband does not like chihuauas, and i came to accept it, i didn't go out and get it just because i like the breed. I have to think about the other person that im living with. We Listed all the breeds we like and if i ever wanted a small dog he doesn't mind mini poodles to bichons, but not chihuauas. That's the kind of thing this guy should have discussed with his wife before getting the rottie!.

I have met alot of friendly rotties and think they are just so gorgeous, it's a shame that this gorgeous breed would be neglected like that. Find a home for him where someone will actually care for him... If my yard was big enough i'd take this guy in! that's just my two cents.

NO! no dog should have to live outside, espesially a Rottie! They are a herding/guard dog who wants to be with and protect their family all the time! If forced to live outside most dogs become aggressive...

DO NOT make your pup live outside! Would you consider baby-gating her in the kitchen? or how about a crate?

Or how about you find a new wife?

ok it would actually just be during the day. You see we have an 11 month old child and the two of them together is too much for her to deal with. She would be inside as soon as i come home from work ( usually around 6:30) and she would sleep inside too. And my dog is far from negleted, she is walked every day and dog park on weekends. She gets all my attention evenings and weekends. And i dont appreciate the get rid of my wife comments. We picked the breed together but she obviously didnt understand all the issues that come with having a dog and a child at the same time.
