i have always grew up with working dogs and horses, i dreamed of being a breeder and now i am!!! i breed jrt's however i plan to breed another breed of dog and have always loved bassetts, there are no bassetts to be gotten over here and apparently have been a waiting list for 2 years for registered breeders, so im trying to find another breed. has to be something small, no bigger than beagle or bassett. good with kids(i have a toddle)and no really hairy breeds. i used to have chihuahua's and had though of them but not very sure, as i from what i have seen they only have a couple of pups at a time, also breed cannot have genetic defaults ie english bulldog

All breeds have genetic faults. Some of the defects are just more well known than others. As a breeder, it is your responsibility to be aware of them.

what about a norwich or norfolk terrier? they're great with kids, can have some soft palate problems though.
other breeds recommended with kids are -
English bull terrier - can have problems with hip and elbow dysplasia
Border terrier - tend to smell quite bad, prone to gum disease, difficult to train
Field Spaniel - can have ear problems
Whippet - few health problems - prone to cold though
cocker spaniel - beware with this breed as recently some lines have developed fairly serious aggressive streaks
Staffordshire bull terrier - great with kids but require firm socialisation with other dogs to avoid dog aggression
corgi - some back problems
cavalier king charles spaniel - prone to heart problems
Hope this helps

I agree with Dawn, you won't find any dog without some genetic fault, you will have to do some reasearch, then not to mention finding the right stud and dam to breed from, and I can assure you anyone who has done the research themselves and able to breed such dogs will not part with them easily, or without considerable cost, and even then there is no guarantee that these dogs pups won't inherit undesirable genetic faults, it just narrows down the possibility.

true. all breeds have specific hereditary diseases that the breed is known for. some corgi's are great with kids, but some corgi's are bred with agression in them and they also shed quite a bit. but i still luv 'em
