So i heard that salt that you put down to get ride of ice can be dangerous to paws. sO DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT INGRIDIANT MAKES IT BURN THE paws of dogs?? (sorry for the capitalization) And what do they do to the stuff at the petstores that claim that it does not burn or harm animals. Can salt be dangerous to dogs if swalloed?

as far as i know its dangerous for human and or dog / animal consumption. Its not from what i was understanding to be pure salt. I think there are chemicals in the " salt" to help get the ice to melt faster. But some bags are actualy like sea salt, or rock salt, and some are synthetic. ( At least their was a differece when i lived in jersey). I would check the bag though for any ingredients that you wouldn't know about...

The salt or the chemicals in the ice melting "salt" can cause burns to dogs paws. If you don't clean their paws after they have walked somewhere where this stuff is used then they might lick their paws clean and injest it and then become very ill.

If I was walking through raw salt in bare feet I'd probably wash my feet off pretty quickly. I always wash Mara's feet after walking her all year round. As well as salt, there is fertilizer and stuff that could burn them.

We don't have that problem down here since we never have ice, but I'm sure that it can't be good. I think that it is poisonous.

It's the salt. Salt dehydrates your body. It dehyrdrates their paws. When Kirby comes in from a salted walk, I dip his paws in water... and be sure to moisturize more with bag balm during winter.

I just picked up a bag of Pet Safe Ice Melt for my icy patches. We have a ramp coming off the end of our deck that is always icy and wanted to be able to use something there other then sand that was pet safe.....since my dogs all use the ramp.
