The German Pinscher

German Pinscher

Am. & Can. Ch. Kedwells Eine Reise Mache. Quality without compromise. 'Reise' broke all CKC breed records. Owned by Heather Green, Angelsun Reg'd, 2245 Hwy. 1A, Summerside, PE C1N 4J9.

Origin: A comparative newcomer to this continent, the German Pinscher has been accepted for registration in Germany since 1879 though it was known in that country long before that time. Its roots can be traced back to the Middle Ages and the Biberhund of southern Germany, a dog bred to hunt beaver, badger and otter. By the 15th century, a breed known as the Rattler evolved. It was renowned as a killer of vermin and protector of the home. The Rattler came in two varieties, rough and smooth, and the smooth is believed to be the forerunner of the German Pinscher. The German Pinscher is often mistaken for a small or young Doberman Pinscher, yet it was the German Pinscher that came first and inspired Louis Dobermann to create his larger version of the breed. Due to two world wars, the German Pinscher slowly began to disappear and it remained for Herr Werner Jung to start a breeding program in the 1950s to put the breed back on its feet.

Temperament: German Pinschers thrive on human attention and affection. They are loyal to their family and protective of them. Alert and vigilant, they may be wary of strangers. The breed displays fearless courage if threatened. This intelligent breed takes well to obedience training.

Activity level: A very active dog, the German Pinscher is not given to excessive barking. He makes an agile and alert watchdog. Daily exercise is a must.

Height/Weight: The sleek and muscular German Pinscher stands 17-20 in (43-51 cm) at the shoulder.

Coat: The coat is short, dense and close-fitting with a healthy gloss.

Colour: German Pinscher coats may be fawn to stag red, and black (with tan markings). In bi-coloured dogs, there are sharply defined and symmetrically placed red or tan markings.

Grooming: Little grooming is required.

sbz is on a distinguished road
I saw a few of these last summer at Woof stock (some dog show). They are very cute. They dont really look like a small dobe. Their body seems longer in proportion to their height.

If any thing Dobs look like German Pinschers as they(German Pinschers) were around first.
AN ANCIENT GERMAN BREED

The German Pinscher originated in Germany and is included in the origins of the Doberman Pinscher, the Miniature Pinscher, Affenpinscher, Miniature Schnauzer, Giant Schnauzer, and the Standard Schnauzer. The Wire Haired and Smooth Haired Pinschers, as the Standard Schnauzer and German Pinscher were originally called, were shown in dog books as early as 1884. The picture at the right is by Malers Vernets (a Frenchman) and drawn around 1780. These medium-sized dogs descended from early European herding and guardian breeds and were not related to the superficially similar terriers of Britain.

There were more colors in the 1959 German breed standard, including two more associated with schnauzers -- pure black and salt n' pepper, (the "silberpinsch") -- as well as the colors we know today. This picture shows a pure black pinscher from 1912. These colors became extinct during the war years. The 1973 breed standard only lists the current colors.

WERNER JUNG'S CONTRIBUTION

Following both World wars, the breed was nearly lost. There were no new litters registered in West Germany from 1949 to 1958. The picture at the left was taken in 1935 in the early years of the war. Werner Jung is credited with single-handedly saving the breed. He searched the farms in Germany for typical Pinschers and used these along with 4 oversized Miniature Pinschers and a black and red bitch from East Germany. Jung risked his life to smuggle her into West Germany. Most German Pinschers today are descendants of these dogs. Some pedigrees in the 1959 PSK Standardbuch show a number of dogs with unknown parentage.

The German Pinscher at the right was bred by Werner Jung and carries the name of his kennel. German Pinschers were also known in Germany as the Standard Pinscher. In the 1960s, Jung tried to revive the silberpinsch through crosses of German Pinschers to the famous Standard Schnauzer Bundesseiger Furst von Hahlweg, but this attempt was unsuccessful.

ARRIVAL IN AMERICA
In the late 1970's and early 1980's, German Pinschers began entering the United States and bred in small numbers. Dogs have been imported from Germany, England, France, and Czechoslovakia. Visit the GPCA information page for the history of the German Pinscher in America.

Yep. Just smaller then a dobe and much larger the a Min Pin.

Remember however that the Min Pin has no relation to the Doberman at all , BUT the German Pinscher was one of the breeds used to devlope the Doberman Pinscher.

Nifty huh ?
