Doberman Owners

We are looking at getting an 11 month old Doberman, we already have an 8 month old Weimaraner and also 3 cats, can anyone tell me if a Doberman would fit in to this family? Any good/bad experiences? Any advice? Thanks :-D

I would think, however, that it depends on your current dog and the temperment of the new dog. Does your weim get along with other dogs? male or female? how old? what sex is the dob? is the dob dog aggressive?
those are the main questions that they probably need to help you more.

Well my girl is 8 months old very sweet and loves other dogs. Loves to play.
The Dobe is a male intact who’s 11 months old, he hasn’t been well socialized and when males come around he barks at them through the fence, we are going to meet him this week and see what we think. My husband thinks you can train the dog and socialized him because he's still a puppy, will having him neutered have an affect on this personality? Is it too late to have him neutered? He's sounds like hes been left to be his own boss, hes on a farm and likes to chase the chickens but he doesn’t bite them or kill them, he barks at them and when we was put into the pen with them he just sat there. I don’t think he’s mean or viscous just untrained.

it is said that a neutered male is more calm than an intact male. I have a year old girl and a 5.5 month old neutered male. they love eachother and get along well. I have heard that male/female relationships are the best for dogs, but I am no expert. I would have the dogs meet in a neutral territory to see how they react to eachother.

don't worry though, experts are on the way!

Hi, nice to meet you! A Doberman can fit with your current family if you will to train and be patient with him.
At 11 months he is still VERY trainable. I would strongly reccommend getting him neutered. If your female spayed? He is not too old, I had my male neutered at about 13 months, he was just fine.
I think a Weim and a Dobe will be alot of fun and keep you on your toes.
Where are you getting him from?
I do Doberman rescue with Southwest Ohio Doberman rescue.

I love the breed, and will never own anything else. I will say an 11 month un neutered, un trained male will be a challenge, but you will se results.

Thanks for the info Dobermom. We just wonder about what sort of an effect neutering would have on him. I'm a little concerned about our cats but my husband said we could train him and he will be fine. We just dont know if we should neuter him or not and what the effects are really. The guy selling him cant spare the time to train him and hes left alone alot so they want a good home for him. Our weimer has been spayed.

You can't leave a Doberman outside in the cold, they would die, even if they have a dog house to live in, they are inside dogs. Also they need to be with their " Pack " menaing you and your hubby , cats and the other dog.

When we brought Jenna home I was concerned about our cat, ( we had just one then now 3 inside cats. Jenna was never around cats . She was fine, curious and we had ti teach her not to play with them ( she is too big ) and not to be rough or try to dominate them but she was fine with firm training. This Dobe will be too.
