Have you ever heard of?

The Saarloos Wolfhond? I just love these dogs and I would love to have one someday. The only way I could get one would be to import and I think that would be way too expensive... so I guess I will have to keep dreaming.

What do you guys think of them?

The one on the right...

They are lovely, but aren't they just like Wolf-Hybrids? Won't that make them probably not the best pets? Forgive my ignorance, but the one breed book I read that mentioned says they are a cross between Wolves and a breed of Russian dog whose name just escaped me.

You're correct; it is a wolf-hybrid. So, it's certainly not the best of pets for everyone unless you got lots of room for them to roam and understand their wild instincts. Even then, however, they can "get out of hand."

Why were they created then? What is the purpose of the breed? Again, they are very beautiful, but I don't understand the purpose of trying to create a new breed from crossing wolves with a domesticated breed.

I've never heard of the breed, but they sort of look like a wolf and Alaskan Husky maybe.

They are no longer considered a hybrid, as they are a recognized dog breed, they no longer have to cross out with wolves, they are truely a wolfin doggie! I have met several at rare breed shows as there is a breeder in New York, right over the Connecticut border, I spoke breifly with her and she said they arn't good pets for the average owner, they have a temperment like a Malanios, or protective GSD, however she said they are generally great with kids and other animals, unlike real wolf-hybrids.

They are crossed with German Shepherds. A man named Leendert Saarloos began an experiment to improve trainability in the GSD by introducing wolf blood. He used Canadian Timber Wolves. The breed was recognized in 1975. Just like rottiegirl said, they are real wolf dogs. All dogs came from wolves... these guys just have wolf blood more recent than other breeds.
