It shouldn't be like that! The problem is Dobies are NOT outside dogs, when they are forced to be kept outside they tend to have very odd coats.

No Doberman's should not have an oily coat. As Dobermom stated it is probably because it is being kept outside which has an adverse effect on the Dobe's coat and also their health. NO Dobe should be kept outside, they are indoor dogs.

As a groomer I will say that the poor thin coated dog is living outside in filth, so the dog's coat is working in overdrive to try to compensate, so the poor thing is oily. I imagine it never gets brushed or bathed.

If you can't talk her into making him an inside dog they try to get her to at least take care of his coat. Tell her what dobified and dobermom told you about dobes being inside dogs. If she truly cares about him then I think this advice should be worth something to her

You will find that most dogs that don't get bathed as required will leave an oily film on your hands, it's not a breed thing at all - I patted a rotweiller the other day and my hands felt oily too and the same can be said of other breeds that I have patted; it's all to do with natural body oil that is dispensed thru the coat plus dust and dirt which contribute to that, you will also see long coated dogs that have this lanky look about them too if they don't get bathed when they should. It's obvious this elderly lady keeps her dobe more as a guard dog than a pet.
