Xoloitzcuintli

Xoloitzcuintli
Also known as the Mexican hairless.

Pastel's Indecent Proposal ('Havana'). Our lovely new puppy out of 'Spring' and Mexican import 'Kin.' Owned by Leah M. Getty, Pastel Reg'd, 238 Valley Glen Bay N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 5S7.

Origin: One of several hairless breeds found throughout the world, the Mexican Hairless is also known as the Toy Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-queent-lee). The name is derived from that of the Aztec Indian god Xolotl and Itzcuintli, the Aztec word for dog. Many folk tales surround the breed, one being that it has great curative powers. The breed is indeed hairless though some sport wisps on the skull, nape, tail tip and feet. There is also a coated variety, covered in a short, smooth, dense coat.

Temperament: The breed has a calm, happy and fearless nature. Suspicious toward strangers, it makes a good watchdog.

Activity level: This is a small but active dog whose exercise needs are easily met.

Height/Weight: The breed is described as being under 13.5 in (34 cm) at the shoulder.

Coat: It's hairless. But those few hairs he might possess should be short and bristly.

Colour: Whole colours and dark shades are preferred.

Grooming: The skin is smooth and satiny, yet thick, offering resistance to injury, sunburn and insects. A sweater for protection is essential in the winter.

I saw some at the dog shows. I was told they are not truley hairless...they grow wisps of hair on the body that they shave off for the shows.

LOL! Looks like a seal! I saw something on T.V. that these people had a chinese crested and they had to put sunblock on it.
