Eating the Cat Food

Name says it all I guess. Our new 16 month old lab./collie mix has been eating our cat's food. Other than royally ticking off our cat, cat food is high fat and well Cleo just doesn't need it.

Besides putting the cat food in a place unreachable by the dog, what can we do? We never catch her doing it but I'm refilling the cat food quite often. And I found dog drool in the cat bowl today lol.

And if putting it out of reach is the only option, what do I do???

I had this problem with Chopper and I ended up having to put the cat food where he couldn't get it. It was too big of a temptation lol I don't really know what else you could do besides not make it available to him.

We have a problem of Ginger eating Snuggles puppy food. The vet said the senior food is like having a salad and the puppy food is like twinkies. In other words, puppy food is fattening. At Ginger's stage in the game, it doesn't matter.

I don't really know what else except put it in an unreachable spot. We put our cat's food next to the sink in the laundry room. We have the same problem with Buck trying to eat Rusty's food. Rusty doesn't always finish his dinner so we have to watch Buck to make sure he doesn't get at it. Sorry I can't be of more help! Maybe puppy gate a cats-only room and putting all the cat stuff in there. The cat can jump over the puppy gate but Cleo can't. That way the cat can still go wherever she wants, but she can also have her own space for all of her stuff and the pup can't bother it, and she can go there if Cleo gets on her nerves.

We have the kitchen gated off so Denali cannot go in there. We usually just raise the gate 4 or 5 inches off the ground so we can still step over it and our cats can squeeze under it. The rest of their food is in the basement - the door is closed and we have a kitty door so again Denali shouldn't be able to get the food (she'd have to break in the kitchen first though) . We feed dry food downstairs and wet food upstairs if you were wondering.

Do your cats eat freely all day? You could do a feeding schedule where EVERYBODY gets fed at the same time and then you pick all the bowls up at the same time...

I will join the chorus. Put it out of reach. Our dogs, even though they know it is bad and they should not eat the cats food, if they get a sliver of a chance they will do it.

Out of reach is your only solution.

I have this problem too.
I have kitten food for MOO PAN my very strange looking cat.
I have Puppy food for Max.
I have high energy for two of the Heelers who run for 16 hours a day
I have large breed food for the Rotties
And I have Senior for the Old Heeler.
I have to feed the puppy in his cage.
I have to feed the Rotties in their cage.
I have to feed the two Heelers in the Sunroom gated off.
And then there's the senior who wants everyones food except hers. The looks she give me are histerical! If looks could kill. I have no other solution either.

I have that problem, too. And now I have to keep the kitten food from my male cat Cotton who has to eat the urinary health food, but wants the kitten food, real bad for him. I have caught him reaching into the crate to steal kitten food, now behind closed doors.

OKAY so new prob .... lol.

The food thing has been solved, we put it up on a big box and the dog is kinda slow and hasnt figured out where it is yet lol.

But now... she is eating the cats LITTER BOX!!!

OMG!!

We started noticing some white stuff on her nose and were puzzled as to where it came from and my bf kept telling her to 'get off the junk' and then we found out... she is eating the cats litter box contents!

We just found a huge amount of the gravel in her TEETH! OMG!! We're not sure if she's eating the poo or not. The litter box is in the basement so we have no choice but to leave the door open for the cat. I tried closing the door so only the cat could get in but the dog moved three heavy boxes and got down there anyweays.

I'm thinking of getting a cover for the litter box, but also maybe getting one of those chain locks and making it so only the cat can phsyically get through.????

GEEEEEZ!
