Breeding For Color/Patterns That Are Not Standard
DISCLAIMER: First, this is NOT directed at anyone. Some recent threads made me curious about it, Sharky's and anothers. I am not attacking or judging anyone about their breeding practices, I just wanted to ask about opinions.
How do the members of the forum feel about breeding dogs of non-standard colors or breeding for non-standard colors? For example, breeding for parti-colored poodles, which are in demand as pets, but do not meet the standard for the breed. Other examples are brindle Pomeranians, white boxers, white German Shepards, etc.
My personal feelings are if the dog is otherwise healthy, has a good temperament, and has been checked with the OFA, then I believe it is all right to breed for unusual coloring. Yes, it is outside the standard, but they are in demand for pets. Many people breed mainly for pets not the show-ring so I see no problem with trying for an unusual color as long as the dogs bred and the resulting puppies are healthy as well.
I do not agree with breeding mutations, such as Albino/White Dobermans, etc. since they have a lot of health problems. But as long as the color is just that color and not related to health problems, I don't really feel it is a bad thing as long as the owner is responsible and careful.
