Doggie Cold

Two of my Dobes seem to have a cold. Poor Lonny seems to have swollen glands and is having a hard time swallowing, and he's got a runny nose. Sady seems to be the same, just without the swollen glands. Anyone have any suggestions on how to make them more comfortable until the weather settles back down? I've been giving them Benedryl, but it doesn't seem to be helping too much. If it was me that was sick, I would be taking something with a decongestant in it, but don't know what else I can give them!

Thanks!

I would call the vet and ask. My Dobes have never had cold before.

I hope they are feeling better soon.

Yeah, I'm going to, just was wondering if anyone had heard anything. The area we live in, we have a lot of sinus colds and allergies, if I get the sniffles from the changing weather, generally my oldest Dobe does as well, but normally Benedryl will help her manage, it doesn't seem to be affecting it this time. Thanks!

When Elle catches colds, we bring her in the bathroom when we shower so she can breath the hot steam which usually unclogs her glands and lets her breath easily. It clears up crusty boogers and everything.

Try putting a humidifire around where they sleep. We even gave Elle hot baths but you have to blowdry them as drying in the cold will make it worse.

I have to say that I have never had a dog with a cold - so as Dobermom says - take them to the vets....

I called the vet, they said there are a lot of colds and things running around right now and that it typically takes an antibiotic to cure it. I am taking them to the vet as soon as I can, I was just trying to get them through until we can get there. One thought I had along the same lines a the humidifier was to get one of those Sudacare plug in that's like the Vicks you put in the humidifier, only they plug in the wall, I was wondering if that might help him sleep! Well, they vets office suggested continuing the Benedryl until we can get in, that it's probably helping some!

what you can do if you have a syringe is the vicks squirty stuff ( the liquid you spray up a humans nose), you can use ONE drop of that stuff in a small syringe and i mean ONE DROP ONLY in alternating nostrals, to help breathing. So if you but it in the roght nostral wait 24 hours and repeat in the left nostral, but i say again only one drop, that stuff is strong.. also when you take a shower, or hot bath let your pup stay in the bathroom with you, and the humidity wil help the breathing. = ) Hope your pup feels better

I have never heard of a cold in dogs, it sounds more like either kennel cough or the bacterium "bordetella bronchiseptica" ...with bordetella you will find that the dog won't cough constantly, just every now and then but if untreated can progress into pneumonia so I wouldn't ignore it, antibiotics are the go. Good luck and let us know how it all pans out.

Deidre , dogs can get colds very easily specially if the weather is against them, or a family member is very sick. Animals are very seseptible to colds, and URI's ( sometimes caused by colds logining in their chest). Mine when they where very young had colds, and i had to treat them with antibiotics, and Robetesson ( for humans), it was horrible, but now the medication is awsome for aniamls... =)
