news from vet

I took Muffi to the Vet today to have her checked over and possibly find out how many pups she is having. Only, when he palpated her, he said she wasn't pregnant but she's gained 1 whole pound since last week! That's alot of weight for a dog that only weighs 6 pounds! He said he would recheck her in 10 days to make sure but he thought it was a "false pregnancy". I'm not sure I believe that...has anyone ever had this same thing happen? I just can't believe she isn't pregnant. You should see the changes her body is going through. She's 45 days along, would be due around Jan 25....surely he would've been able to feel something????? Please...someone give me some hope that she still might be pregnant! Thanks

False pregnancies are very common and unfortunately they look like real pregnancies... mood changes, weight gain and everything. But that's just what I've heard. The last pregnant dog I had was about 10 1/2 years ago...

Did the vet do an ultrasound? I would go with what the vet said though. They tend to know what they're talking about.

I just read your other thread... and this looks like the answer you were looking for. Unwanted/accidental litter with neighbor's dog? Why are you hoping the vet is wrong? There are so many dogs in the world... and so many being put to sleep in shelters. This is actually a good thing. You didn't have to abort or anything.

45 days is pretty late to be able to palpate...it's usually done around 28 days. After that, the uterus gets too large to be able to feel anything.

If she is having a phantom pregnancy, then she will go through all the stages of an actual pregnancy, including labor. She'll get milk in, become swollen, act different etc. Unless you have a blood test and/or x-ray, ultrasound (although the ultrasounds can read wrong too) and saw a tie, you really can't be certain and should listen to the vet.
