Ratzel, fratz, grrrr

Today I ended up spending 5 hours at the vets with Penny. The little sweety ate something that disagreed with her when I took her outside at 3:00 a.m. By 8:00 a.m. she had very very watery diarrhea, was shaking, drooling like a leaky sieve (which she never does) and looked like she did not feel well. I grabbed her up and immediately took her to her vet. The vet did a couple of tests and then said that she thinks that Penny ate something toxic to her and since I know she had not had a chance to get anything inside the house, it had to be something outside.

The vet gave her several shots, took x-rays and watched her for a couple of hours. Now I am suppose to give her Pepcid AC (5 mg, twice a day) and a bland diet and the most important thing is to keep her hydrated. Thank goodness I purchased some of those pill pocket thingies because Penny ate that with no problem. If how she drank water after we got home is any indication, I won't have to use the squirty thingy that the vet gave me in case she wouldn't drink. I thought she was going to burst with the amount of water she drank. I am not sure what it typically costs, but I think my vet is extremely cheap because with the x-rays, shots, vet check, etc. it only cost me $159.00. Anybody know if that is cheap or not?

We had plans to go out and have a birthday dinner for myself, my mother and my nephew (we all have birthdays around now), but we ended up cancelling because of Penny, but thank God she seems to be doing better. She actually ate 3 treats at the vets, so I know she is doing better. Looks like she will miss her puppy class tomorrow and we still don't know if she will still be getting fixed on Monday yet. It all depends on how she is doing tomorrow. Hopefully she will be doing better.

I'm so glad to hear that she came out of this ok! To answer your question about the bill...yes I think it was VERY reasonable, compared to such costs around my area anyway.

I thought so. I just wish that I knew which plant among dozens is what Penny ate. I don't want my baby to go through that again even though she was very very good at the vets. I was very proud of her.

Not yet she isn't. She has been throwing up a lot since we got home. Luckily she has been drinking water too. I had given her small amounts of rice and chicken, but she couldn't keep it down. I think I am not going to give her any more food tonight and try giving her just a tablespoon full tomorrow morning and see how she does on that before I try another tablesoon full. Poor sweetie, I feel so bad for her. I also don't think that the vet is going to spay her on Monday because she has been so sick. She will also miss her puppy class tomorrow.

Sounds nasty. You can try canned pumkpin, see how that goes. For the most part, I guess she just needs to clear out.

Poor Penny...hope she gets well quick; would be good if you knew what on earth she ingested but with dogs anything and everything is possible. I would cancel the desexing operation, you don't want to put her through more stress and having to recover from the anaesthetic as well after what she is going through.

I think your vet is quite a rarity in that he is incredibly inexpensive; vets here in australia would charge you about that much for the xray's alone...wish I had a vet that wasn't so ambitious in becoming a millionaire overnight, lol.

This morning Penny took a running leap and nose in the mouth. Ewwww but I forgave her because she is back to her old self. I am still being stingy on the food because I don't want her throwing up her food again. She is sniffing around looking for more food, so I know she is better. Her ears and mouth are nice and dry, so no more drooling. She hasn't had a bowel movement yet, so don't know about her stool. She has a sparkle in her eyes again and looking for mischief to get into. At least she does now, but wait until I bathe her.

I am skipping her puppy class because of what the vet said, but I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow morning to see if the vet thinks she is ready for spaying. If the vet says no, then I will take her home. If she feels that Penny is well enough then I will go ahead with the spaying. I totally trust the vet's decision.

I am sorry to hear about Penny. Coulds have got into some mouse poison ? Or maybe she ate something dead and icky, Rudy has done that.

I hope she is feeling better real soon.
