chipping pups

I have thought about microchipping my pug pups before they leave me. I guarantee my pups and wondered if someone unscrupleless could switch a pup to get their money back? Would I be able to recognise my pup after a year? What do you think ?
Do any of you chip your litters? Is it costly? Can you do it yourself?

Just the things you think of when you are up all night waiting for pups.

Microchipping isn't a bad idea, but I personally don't. I ahve my pups tattoed. A good idea if you do either tattoing or microchipping is to put your own name down, that way if any of your pups ever ends up in a shelter or rescue they can contact you and you can go rescue your baby. ***From our first litter of Bernese we got a call from a crowded shelter in NY right after 9/11 and one of our dogs was in the pound, we went and got him and he was placed through Bernese Rescue.

Both procedures are realativly easy, and not that expensive, however microchipping is a bit more costly, and a quick thing I may add is that there is no universal microchip reader.

***Ticket's owner was killed in the 9/11 tradgedy, he worked in the first twin tower, he lived right outside of NYC. He had no immediete family, and most of his family lived in apartments too small for Ticket, and the rest, understandably didn't want to take on such a large dog.

Are you chipping the pups before they go to new homes? My birds are chipped and my shihtzu but not the pugs. I have thought about it Shushu is tattooed but it is on her belly not her thigh (small pup, tiny leg, miscalculation) now with stretched ninnies you can't read it. Bas has scars that I can id him by, but the pups are usually black and I just wonder if I could recognise them a year or more later afterlast seeing them 9-10 weeks old.

Yes, go for the chipping the cost will depend on where you live, in someplaces breeders do it them selves, but here a vet has to do it which makes it more costly. Personally i prefer it to a tattoo because a tattoo can fade and be changed

That was my next question, are there readers that scan both avid and the other chip, can't think of the name. So chipping is only good if your dog is scanned by the right company equipment? Will the wrong reader even show that the dog has a chip?
So many ways to id dogs but what is the best? I know the chip gives the safest less painful method.

As far as I have herd, the reader will show that there is a chip, so then the vet or rescue should be able to get the correct reader

Yes i will be chipping all my pups. I think its the best thing. They will be chipped in my name though. We could have done a blood test but the breeders bitch was stolen so it was very sad.

In the US there are six big companies that I know of producing micro chips, some of the readers detect all chips but will only bring up information on their own product, and some won't detect chips if not their own product.

Don't forget Microchips can be removed and information from them CAN be changed!

Microchipping and tattooing together is the best protection
