Update on Diamond Foods Recall - Expanded

an update from the FDA website -

================================================== =======
December 30, 2005

FDA Investigation of Diamond Pet Food Finds Some Product Exported

In its continuing investigation of the contamination of pet food manufactured at Diamond Pet Food’s Gaston, SC, facility, the Food and Drug Administration has found that some of the product subject to a company recall had been exported to at least 29 countries, including countries within the European Union. Diamond Pet Foods is recalling certain lots of pet food made at the plant earlier this year after the discovery that some of the products were contaminated with aflatoxin, a toxin created by the fungus Aspergillus flavus. The company has notified distributors and asked them to hold recalled products.

FDA’s Office of International Programs has notified the countries that received the product about the recall.

To date, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has received reports from four States of 41 dogs becoming ill reportedly from consumption of the contaminated pet food, with 23 of these dogs having died.

Is that the name of the dog food? In other words, would I ask for Diamond Dog food or does it have another name and Diamond is the manufacturer?

Angry Diamond Pet Foods -Contaminated, kills dozens of dogs

Diamond Pet Foods recalled 19 varieties containing toxic chemical

Quote:
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that at least 76 dogs nationwide are believed to have died as a result of eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods.

The company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food because tests showed high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxic chemical that comes from a fungus found on corn and other grains that causes severe liver damage in animals.

The company recalled products manufactured at its Gaston, S.C., plant from around September to November 2005. Based on sample testing, Diamond has narrowed down the exposure to food produced on Oct. 11, Brinkmann said Thursday.

The recalled dog food has also been exported to at least 29 countries. I hope there will not be anymore doggie deaths because of this.
