Question Question about antibiotics

Lilly has been on a lot of antibiotics lately and I think they are really messing with her body.

The last ones she was on were Rilexine along with her prednisone for the swelling and infection she got from the spider bite. She finished them about 8 days ago.

During the week I noticed her glands were really swollen and she was having difficulty eating and breathing, I took her to the vet and I needed her to get a biopsy too. Anyway the vet was quite concerned and gave her more antibiotics, this time a high dose of Noroclav. I have to see if the swelling goes down but she still seems to be having difficulty eating.

Last night she was sick all night and this morning she's the same.

Do you think I should keep her on the Noroclav? It's a really high dose and she is quite small. She's also lost 1.3 kilos since the spider bite and the vet said that would be because she can't eat much on the antibiotics but that's quite a bit considering she is only around 4-5 to begin with.

I don't know if it's worth it seeing they are making her so sick.

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

The only thing I've experienced is recently when Miko had been on one antibiotic for quite a while and it wasn't working, the vet said he could have built up a resistance to it over the years (he's been on it several times). So, he switched to a different one and he started getting better.

I know in humans, if you take too high a dose of antibiotics, it can kill the good bacteria which invites other problems. I don't know, though, if this can happen in dogs.

Poor Lilly. She needs to catch a break! You, too!

Thanks guys! I'm not sure if she would be allergic because she had a lot of antibiotics back in October, but it could very well have built up in her system.

I was thinking about that too. That could be the reason for the swelling of her glands etc. I will ask the vet again and see if there is anything I can do about that, if it is the case.

Why is she on these antibiotics? How long of duration is she on them for? How often do you administer these meds?

Do you know the generic names for these medications.. I'm not familiar with the ones you listed.. otherwise I could be of more help.

first thing i though she is allergic to the antibiotics. If i where you i would seek a second opinion.. it never hurts to have another vet look st the case and say his/her thoughts =) I would also have some blood work done to see if there is anything else that might be nessed with , since the antibiotics are so strong... but i would talk to another vet and see what his/her oppinion is.. you may find a better and easier solution. Hope all goes well. =)

Quote:
SIDE EFFECTS

Prednisone & prednsolone have activity in the kidney leading to the conservation of salt. This creates the classical side effects of prednisone/prednisolone use: excessive thirst and excessive urination. If this occurs, another steroid can be selected or the predisone/prednisolone dose can be dropped.

Prednisone/prednisolone are commonly used for several weeks or even months at a time to get a chronic process under control. It is important that the dose be tapered to an every other day schedule once the condition is controlled. The reason for this is that body will perceive these hormones and not produce any of its own. In time, the adrenal glands will atrophy so that when the medication is discontinued, the patient will be unable to respond to any stressful situation. An actual circulatory crisis can result. By using the medication every other day, this allows the body's own adrenal glands to remain active.

Any latent infections can be unmasked by prednisone use. (Feline upper respiratory infections would be a classical example. When a cat recovers clinically, the infection simply goes dormant. Glucocorticoid use could bring the infection out again.)
I found my old dog, TPau reacted to this drug like she would have chemotherapy. She was very ill while taking the drug.

From what I'm reading all antibotics are processed thru kidneys & liver to work. With what Lilly's been thru some intolerance might be expected.

I would make sure that your Vet hasn't forgotten the liver function tests. Call him with your concerns - as I remember they are the kind of vet that would welcome your concern.

Here is the data sheet for the other one which has less side effects
