What every wanna be breeder should know.

What are some things that a person who would like to become a breeder should know before breeding? There are so many people who think it's just a matter of putting two dogs together, but there is so much more.

so, tell us what are the abc's of a good responsible breeder.

Know your breed.
Know your dogs lines.
Know your dogs health history.
This are a few off the top.

Know what could go wrong
Know that you have got good homes for all of your pups
Know that you should be responsible for your pups for the rest of their lives

for the love of the breed of course! a responsible breeder would NEVER breed for money...its not a money making type of thing anyways. As a breeder your main goal should be bettering the breed.keeping the breed alive and at its best..not just because you wanna make a few bucks.

these are great, keep em coming.
we need to hear about the REAL side of breeding and not from some stiff website, but from real people.

should you show your dogs before you breed them?

yes whether its working or conformation, you need to be sure they are correct and can do what you are breeding them for

Yes they should be shown. How do you know your dog fits the standard if no one else tells you.Plus they should be able to perform, where it be earth dog for terriers, herding, obed, tracking, weight pull, carting, hunting, water rescue. There is so much people can do with their dogs then just pump out puppies.Having dogs should be fun not a job.

there are several breeders, of herd dogs especially, who despise conformation and say that breeding for looks (conformation) is to be frowned upon. They say breeding should be done based on temperment, intelligence and abilty to do their "job" alone.

what are some responses to this? I will have to admit that I tend to side with these breeders and dislike conformation in most situations.
