I dont cut my dogs nails, so I am no pro.
There is a quick in the nail, you dont want to cut that. My females nails recently were VERY long. I took her in for a trim, and then they filed them. They were able to get them shorter by fileing them down.
The longer the nail the longer the quick. It is really best to keep on it. I think I would suggest once every 3 weeks or so. Maybe less maybe more, every dog is different.

I cut my dog's nails. Sometimes they wear down naturally by digging, running on cement, etc... Since my dog is of moderate activity, I usually only need to cut his nails once a month [About as often as I bathe him]. When the nails are longer than just-reaching-the-ground, it's probably time to cut them.

Don't cut past the quick... My nail clipper has a stopper on it, so I can just clip off a mm at a time if I want to.

If this is your first time clipping the dog's nails, make sure you desensitize him to the clippers like you would a brush, and practise handling the puppy's toes, etc.

Only take off a small amount at a time. If they have gotten too long and you are trying to get them back, trimming and then filing around can speed up the quick receding (it recedes as the nails get shorter). To get them back to a manageable length, you can trim every three days. Normal trimming would be once a week if you want to keep them shorter.

Ollie doesn't need his trimmed, ever. I think cause of the weird running in the same place on the cement thing he does. Louise usually chews her own, but occasionally i notice that they are too long. Her nails are white, so it's easy to see where the pink is and how to avoid it.

What color nails does your dog have?

i grind my dogs nails every week. it is part of their bathing routine. it totally depends on the dog's nail type ie thick nails, thin nails, some dog's quicks grow much faster w/ the nail than others do i'm not sure why. but if you are uncomfortable doing' it your dog will sense that. try taking your dog to the groomers and ask if they can show you while they are doing it. i do that for a lot of people most of whom decide it's easier for me to do it
